Freedom

I'm a fan of Easy Rider. Many great moments in that film, but this is probably the greatest.

I often remember that monologue when I hit the road to play a gig or even for band practice. Being a long haired guitarist in a band in my 40s, playing the music I love live and seeing the people dancing to it, lighting a cigarette while taking a break to stretch my legs during road trips, these small things are the last glimpses of freedom I still can point out in these sad times we're living.

What does freedom mean to you?

Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose
Nothin', don't mean nothin' hon' if it ain't free, no no
And, feelin' good was easy, Lord, when he sang the blues
You know, feelin' good was good enough for me
Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee

My freedom is to get home from work on a daily basis, being able to keep the roof , and food on the table, and to enjoy the company I keep, knowing my family is in good health, and being able to share my music with anyone who can find the time to listen to it, mistakes and all!
Cheers Mitch

I decided many years ago not to do anything I didn’t want to do. To me that is freedom. This doesn’t mean I can do anything I want to. It also doesn’t mean I don’t have to do something I may not enjoy. It is the freedom to look at all the alternatives and to make the choice that is best for me.

To me there's a tad more to it.

Even when you are a percect law abiding citizen, society (especially the Government) smothers you with everything it can. Moral rules (we need some, but not so many), restrictive laws, hell, you can't even sneeze without someone admoesting you these days.

You live standing accused of being yourself. And if you stand up for who you are and want to be, you'll be frowned upon and called unfit.

I do not feel free at all. I feel like I am an prisoner of indentured servitude. I have been working since I was 15 years old. I'm 61 now and can not see a time in my future that I will be able to retire any time soon. Live to work, work to live.
I feel a lot like this too.
I was always doing without, working then working at home / house / cars, etc. for the future.
I have always worked long hours, but work to live first.

Well, the future is now and it aint all that bright.
But, taken from the sig from another forum, and as has been said in many ways "You are not here just to work and pay bills".
I'm still very frugal (cheapskate actually - but by necessity) but have treated myself in recent years.
I still have the work load, but have slowed the pace some; partly just getting older but partly by choice.

Now I always try to carve out a little free(dom) time for myself every day (doesnt always happen), which is playing guitar or sometimes watching old movies, by myself, with no one yapping, or simply trying to nap for 30 min or so as I am always sleep deprived.

I am currently somewhere in progress with:

I have seen this before but missed a lot of detail.

God, I love a young Lauren Bacall.
Pretty, a bit too skinny, but so feisty!!

I need to cue up Casablanca again too.

Freedom to me is freedom from fear. It is not about all the choices I have, about money or the ability or possibility to realize myself or my dreams. It is simply living and knowing that I am reasonably safe. I am safe because my country is not at war. I am safe because we have a social system that takes reasonably good care of me if I get sick, if I lose my job or am unable to work. It is the knowledge that my kids can go to school without me having to pay anything but my taxes. It is knowing that I live in a society where corruption is reasonably uncommon and where politicians in general are not crooks. I is knowing that the canches of anyting bad happening to me are quite small, really. And it is knowing that most people really are ok. I don't believe the Man is out to get me, I don't care if people think I look stupid in my flared jeans, I don't care if people don't like my music or the way I sing. Sure, I, like everyone else, have to work to make a living, but that's the way the world has always been. I'll likely ruin my health the way I'm working at the moment, but I choose to work where I work, so I can't complain. I don't expect much, and I certainly don't expect to be happy all the time, but I appreciate it when I am. And I am really thankful for my safety. Freedom is freedom from fear.

Now I want to move to Norway !!!! (y)

The statement about relatively little corruption is wonderful; I wish that were true here as it is a huge problem.
Lobbyists, special interests, and politicians and their greed is not serving the citizenry at all.
BOTH sides / not a political debate.
I do fear the unrest of the near future here.
