I like the happy medium approach too. ...
Obviously, if people can post within reason at least a hint of pertinent replies within the thread, I think we can handle not being stifling and yet still remain relative enough within most threads to accomplish most thread starter's intentions.

I think a lot has to do with the subject of the OP, too.

If someone posts a technical question, they have a need and are looking for help. In such instances, it is pretty important to keep things relevant to the OP so that the poster can get the help he/she needs. But, even then, sometimes a person will have a tidbit of information that is only slightly related to the OP that can provide a bit of insight, as well.

However, some (as in, A LOT!) of the threads we create are pretty open-ended and free-flowing. They are less technical and more just casual observations. In such a case, thread drift can actually create interest in the thread.

I agree,,,,,,,,,,, that is why a happy medium makes a lot of sense.

Human nature dictates that we can only speak for ourselves as our own mind is the only one we have. Obviously no one can see into another's (Spock from Star Trek not included ) so we can only tap into our own. Therefore it's quite obvious that we fall into the first person and speak from personal experience and opinion. In fact I'm doing that just now voicing a personal option. But in my own defense as much as I enjoy a good joke, seeing half a dozen pictures or videos inserted into a thread with often little to do with the topic makes me grit my teeth. So obviously I need to "get over myself " and accept this practice. Yes? Naturally it's not going to change or modify simply because years of training and operating methods from my career still linger in my daily life. So again, it's simple. I'm going to attempt to ignore the pattern and just get over myself! :coffee::LOL:

No, Wade. I think you've made some good points. It's good that you brought it up. Like Chili says, it's all about finding that happy medium.

Lately I've deleted several replies before sending as they're not actually related to the topic of a thread I'm reading. Trying to reverse programming one post at a time.
I do that. I also have started typing responses in "word' and editing before I go back to the forum. And I also don't give a hoot if someone gets butthurt. Take a dip in the balm and get over it.

No, Wade. Like Chili says, it's all about finding that happy medium.

RVA said it first but I simply reiterated and lives as my own stepfather exemplified. He was far from perfect yet was one whom I credit with infinite positive influence on the shaping of the man I was to become. Beginning at age 12 till his death when I was about 43, he instilled this philosophy in me.

PS. Despite divorce not being the ideal outcome of marriage, I sure am glad my mom divorced my dad, so I was able to have a 2nd dad who had such a calmer, more cerebral common sense way he approached situations, life and treatment of others. To come from my first 12 years exposed to anger as a means to settle situations rather than sensible and caring for the other guy mentality, having the role model of my 2nd dad sure gave me the tools and living example of a man like I saw I wanted to grow to be rather than the man I vowed never to be. This was my aim despite what I saw through my own father's example he presented.

Also, in regards to videos as mentioned by Wade.
I will stand up and represent most videos I post and promote on here. They are 99% of the time pertinent to the topic.
Usually they are how to.... discharge caps properly so as to not kill oneself while working on amps, or where to find how to play certain licks of songs one is learning, or examples of a good tone vs eeek tone or major 60 cycle hum vs quiet bliss and why it happens vs how to take measures to eliminate it.

Then in other less serious topics like what band, what guitarist, what bass player, what amp, stomp box, how to get that woman tone.... , the topic itself basically calls for a vid or a link to illustrate the thread topic and hence my impetus to post it.
So, I guess for the most part, I may hit upon an egregious post every now and then or superfluous post, but for the most part, I stick on point yet still leave room for a laugh or 2.

When I say I gotta get over myself I mean I've no hurt feelings or anything like that. But by self-criticism I see where I'd be an idiot to think people can stay on track. I'm one of those that remain focused where others cannot. Training and personal discipline. Would wait for days at times for a specific target to appear in less than "nice conditions" to make my shot. That focus remains and often unnerves folks when I'm interrupted and I resume right where I left off before I was interrupted.

But I'm just fine. In fact even better because of the honest and open replies. Y'all are great! Thanks! (y)

Wade, you are pretty great in this brother's eyes too. Another thing my stepdad helped grow in me,,,,,, mom did a good job before leaving my real dad as well, was respect for others.
I think the less than irritated at Wade reactions so far, are a testimony to how it is possible a mongrel hoard can exist in the same space on mature respectful levels.

And while I'm off the subject, doing my best to blend in...
Do drop in at the shed where this heathen halfbreed lives. Got my new shooter with a picture too!:):offtopic: See? There's hope for my anal retentive mind yet huh?

I like the happy medium approach too. Of course we should ost relevant replies, but don't feel as if you are headed to Auschwitz if you post a little humor or reply in a tangential fashion. Wade, you have valid points and concerns, and if any of us raise a stink to your message, they are a bit hard headed, narrow minded, childish or just combative by nature.

Obviously, if people can post within reason at least a hint of pertinent replies within the thread, I think we can handle not being stifling and yet still remain relative enough within most threads to accomplish most thread starter's intentions.

I also agree with most of what you say can be a benefit from keeping things on track and how some folks do as your friend/neighbor does and powers their way over all others' conversations or ideas to the point of either being rude, improper or just wrong.
I have experienced this type of action almost 95% of the time I try to speak orally one on one or in a crowd of people trying to converse and express a thought. Instead of being able to fully complete a sentence, I get stampeded or run off the track by people who can't simply let me complete my message. Often times they'd get an answer to the question they interrupt with, if they just let me finish talking.

I'm guilty too.

I do that, but on the other hand I like it when others do the same thing in my threads
