We have that in the US as well but it's changed a lot over the years. In modern tradition the family gathers to celebrate Facebook and Entertainment television in a deep spiritual sort of way while they all get high together and apply tattoos on one another's faces. Babies and young children are then set aside to watch real-world murder case style TV programs in a sort of "coming of age" manner. This begins to move them away from their basic Saturday morning cartoons while acclimating them into a more useful real-life mood and overall direction.
The blast(!!) is in the end when everyone breaks the pinata that spills out loads of hard used drug paraphernalia that all the kids are allowed to take home with them ...because it's legal.
Though a bit less common in practice tradition says that at the end of the celebration the oldest teenage daughter is to be prepared to surprise her dad, while in a socialized circle, with letting him know she's pregnant.
Yea, I know ...a bit different than Canadians are used to ...at this point.
