Eric Johnson Rig Rundown

An interesting point in the interview above is that EJ was originally a piano player. This explains his approach to guitar. He spent a lot of time applying the same concepts of voice leading to guitar. It’s much easier on the piano but takes a lot more work to apply the same thing to the guitar.

Great player, but he's such a goober with his gear. :pound-hand:

Ha!

I think some of the beliefs about his gear opinions are overblown.

The whole idea, for example, that he thinks he can tell different brands of batteries in his pedals is way exaggerated. I read an interview with him sometime back and EJ describes the backstory to all that.

What had happened is that he was doing a sound check and noticed his fuzz sounded sharp and edgy, He started checking things out and found that it had what he described as a “super, high-intensity” battery (I’m not sure what that could be). He replaced it with a Duracell battery that he had, and things were back to normal for him.

From there, this simple discovery that took a minute turned into a huge story and even morphed into the urban legend that somehow he could hear the difference between Energizer and Duracell - something he never claimed!
