I read about the Appleton guitar a few years back.
It even precedes the Broadcaster/Telecaster.

ITs also been proven Luthiers as far back as the 1500 were using open book headstock designs on lutes-- and other sttinged instruments--
but lets face it those guys are all dead and cant sue .............they existed BEFORE patents--- and so their creations are --100% --- steal able---
Agnesi still needs to go hide under a rock --- and the new CEO needs to fire his a$$ publicly and drop the lawsuit --- save face and MOVE THE "F" on -- and while their at it they could make some good guitars and cut the prices to COMPETE not sue---

Well, that shape is nothing more than an archtop with a cutaway reduced in size. Not surprising in the 50s or earlier, isnt it (the surprise designs were the SD and the three beauties from 1958)? The Telecaster, btw, as well. Gibson decided to use an arched front; others did not.
