Damn! Computer virus problem.

So, I forgot to renew my kid's anti virus program on his pc. Today, when he turned his computer on, the screen went red after about half a minute. A box containing the words "Windows error warning" danced across the screen and the computer turned itself off again. What the hell do I do? Btw. no cd-drive in the computer. I know NOTHING about computers...

Download on a good computer
Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10

You will copy it to a flash drive and when your infected computer is booting up go into the bios setup and have it boot to the USB drive. This will bypass the windoze operating system and you will be able to run the tool to inspect and clean your hard drive of bad stuff.

After you get this fixed, tell your son to stop downloading porn and he should be OK. :p

Honestly, he's too young for that yet... Minecraft is his thing. But I guess it won't be long. Thanks again. I'll have to wait until tomorrow to try to fix it. Fingers crossed I'll be able to do it. I'm a retard with computers. Hopefully I'll find out how to do the bios thing...

I hold my head up high, Johnny! I just hope I can fix it for my kid. He'll be pretty disappointed if he can't use his computer during the Christmas holidays.

Here's a little info on booting from a USB.

Basically, when a computer boots up, it's looking for bootup instructions. Usually, this will come from the hard drive. However, in your case, you don't want to do that, because the viruses are on the hard drive. What Wavmixer is advising is to download the Kaspersky Rescue Disc onto the flash drive. In addition to the tool for removing the infection, this has bootup instructions, as well. So, when the computer boots off of the flash drive, you can run the virus removal tool to remove infections from the hard drive.

However, to get the computer to boot off the flash drive, you have to set the computer to do that. This is done in the Basic Input Output System (BIOS). Usually, this requires hitting a key just the computer starts. You may get a brief prompt just as the computer is booting up telling you to hit a key to enter setup. The key to hit wil vary from computer model to computer model. Often, it's F1 or F12. But, it may be different for you computer.

Yeah, I've figured out how to get to the bios menu (F8). I downloaded the Kaspersky thing to a USB. So I guess I stick the USB in the computer, turn it on and enter the bios menu. Then I enter the boot menu? Will the USB show up there? I'll have to wait until tomorrow to do it since my kids are a sleep and the pc is in one of their rooms.

I think I know how to sort out the boot order, at least as long as the USB option shows up in the boot order menu. There is a simple "drag to re-order" menu in the BIOS.

Then the question is whether or not the whole Kaspersky operation is self-explanatory. I need all the help I can get.:) Oh, well, I guess I'l figure it out tomorrow. If not, I'll ask for help here again.:)

Thanks for your help!

The kids google minecraft cheats and download whatever they find. I was helping my grandson and the first ten links he found were infected. I do IT work and network security for a living. Anti virus will not protect you from a lot of the stuff out there. The malware uses self modifying techniques that are updated several times a day. The anti virus is always a day or so behind.

Fingers crossed the Kaspersky thing will fix the problem for now at least...

Get your son to help you, he should be able to follow the directions if he knows how to play mindcraft.
