Well I went flying today right from inside my Rec room. And I must tell you the weather was fine 80F no breeze at all. This is flying done on my flight sim, specifically designed for us Pilots. Its very realistic I plug in my Transmitter and Bam there I am. Select the flying field I would like or weather conditions and list goes on . I have a blast I can put in size and weight of Aircraft, so lets say my plane is 14lbs with a 78" wingspan, I can put this in. Oh lets say I would like wind I can select how strong which direction I would like etc. I can have a camera view from inside cockpit. I have 30 different airfields I can use from grass to asphalt , short strip long strip, trees or wide open, I have 35 different Aircraft from Bi wing, Jet, Scale or sport planes, fully aerobatic to trainer level planes for beginners. Can set the program for doing landings only the program will continually put the plane in landing mode once plane is landed it will automatically restart. I can set the wind velocity at any MPH. This simulator is FANTASTIC!! Its great for doing maneuvers , landings, takeoffs, Approaches Etc. This is a wonderful training tool and is quite accurate. For doing maneuvers this is the way to learn if you crash you just hit the button and you are ready to take control and start over. The planes are very realistic when crashing they break apart and you hear the sounds. Everything is functional with this sim sounds , movements of ailerons, rudder, propeller, throttle and sounds of engines all different and realistic to the plane you are flying. Thanks Adrian, its great!! I have used this for the past 4 years. You can put in cloudy skies, which is really tricky to fly in. its realistic you have to be on your toes when you fly in cloudy weather and windy weather as well. What's really a challenge for Pilots is crosswind!! Flying is very challenging and rewarding, I luv it!!!!!!!!!! Oh and don't forget the building side of it also!!!!!! was pretty tricky trying to take that last picture while flying and handling the camera at the same time .

Most people learn , but not everyone Cadorman. I recommend for best results to join a Club in your area, where they will provide you with an Instructor. The flight sim is a good aid for those who are already learning through a club. I don't recommend it for someone who has no experience whatsoever. There is so much to learn flying is only a small part of it. You need to be able to set up a gas or nitro run engine and get to know about electronics, batteries etc and the list goes on and on. The sim cant teach you any of that, and there is electric motors as well as true Turbines. You have to crawl before you can walk, you will need to start with a high wing trainer .
 
This is what I recommend to start its called an ARF kit almost ready to fly comes with detailed instructions to put together. They come with everything you need except glue. It helps you to learn the different parts of the plane, once you put a couple of these together, then you can venture into building one. Its always nice to be in a Club to get help from other Pilots who will gladly help you.

This Transmitter is the one I use with my flight sim. This Radio was my main working radio,DSC00167.JPG and is programmed to still be able to be used as a day to day user. It is not one that comes with the program.
 
Ran across some of my old RC flying pics. So, here's my first plane, with the "if that 14 year old can fly so can I" no help asked attitude I had.

OK, I think I need to learn from some one. Fast forward and my neighbor gets into RC. We figure we can figure this out. So, plane #2. Knowing that I'm gonna crash land each time for a while I get a plane that can handle massive reconstruction.

After a month of weekends I finally get the art of landing. This plane had more epoxy by weight than the original plane.

The next one was a simple elevator and rudder, a cream puff to fly. Still have it.

Then upped my game to a little higher performance ones.

And for really lazy flights was this Wander 99" wing span powered glider.

Nice stuff; always wanted to get into that hobby.
I built model rockets and gas planes that fly on the 2 line up/down tether.
Crashed a lot.
