Challenged myself last night !

Last year or so been in the studio a lot. At home , turned into a mini studio. Hardly ever play full songs anymore(had the band together last year practicing.then accident 2) how fun that was. To just focus on relating to the music in the song. Last night..hooked USB interface into Audacity(1 mic for all things-no preamp) -challenged myself to make a song strait thru..no 2nd takes..1 hr limit
Made Drum loop first..then
Guitar
Bass
Sang(yukk..but effective to place words) reacted vs a format on paper

point was..the creative flow was cohesive..the main song idea was captured in a solid way. now can dissect it..but the joy of music came in that the song was done. Sometimes think the 010101 computer start & stop, cut n paste..time stretch..that is computer work..prefer to be a player..love the recording..but def see how we can hit very many brick walls during a song writing phase..we end up with tiny little blocks of recordings that possibly dont relate in the context of the song cause of focusing on perfection in a box. Emotion seems to come through when i just play..Time to separate the 2.. go back to roots..instead of playing an intro all day..lol...play music....

I don't like to edit anything in my music myself, maybe here or there for the drums but very little, i'll play the entire track, if i don't like it i'll scrap it and rerecord. a lot of my songs also end up as an exercise in improvising leads, those I don't plan out, I just play and those end up being my favorite parts in writing music, not to say i don't enjoy the other aspects but I love the challenge. but very right about the road blocks. Usually if I take a nap and then come back to it, things come to me a lot easier. Usually i'll do guitar, drums, and then bass if just those instruments. I have a really hard time thinking about what i want to do with drums.

Good work!!!!!

Audacity is such a cool tool. So easy and fun to use.

Ive found such incredible freedom in my humble little home studio with a Focusrite USB Interface and Audacity.

I must admit that i dont really write original things often, but i use it as a tool to really hone and perfect my playing on certain songs that we perform.

One morning, a few weeks ago, my drummer colleague and i were chatting between sessions and he pulled up "Out In The Fields" on his phone and made a comment about how good Gary Moore was on guitar.

That comment sparked my interest in performing a demo of that song. No real reason other than to walk in Gary's musical footsteps.

We recorded a drum track and bass track while playing along to the original recording. I took those files home on my drive as separate MP3's and built the entire song - layer by layer - here at home.

Almost all my demos start like this. I can also record original song ideas and later return to them and expound upon them.

I suppose that my demos are also helping me perfect and solidify my own personal music catalogue.

Here's my quandary...

Im in a band with a great bunch of guys, but they are not as hungry as i am. They are also not quite as open minded with respect to the material we play. They want to stay with Judas Priest, Metallica, Sabbath, etc.

My dream is to create another band soon with the express purpose of fronting a 5-6 night a week working band, effectively replacing my income from the studio and eliminate my daily commuting, which is often up to 4 hours (round trip) in traffic.

I love metal and rock. Its in my blood and i never get tired of it, but what's in my head is a band that plays a wider vareity of stuff like Eagles, Billy Joel, Ratt, GNR, Planet P, SRV, Warrant, Johnny Cash, Poison, Foreigner, Bryan Adams, Deep Purple, Eddie Money, KWS, BOC, Motorhead, Merle Haggard, etc., all in the same set and all with my "musically chameleonic" approach.

The trouble is, most musicians i talk to are dead-set against this mix of covers, but, interestingly, most venue owners i talk with really love the idea of mixing such a wide vareity of genres in a single setlist.

Its either this or leaving on tour to play lead kazoo for @BFT Gibson.

One or the other...

Preach it.

So true, end up with rhythm takes that are perfect, timing, tone, etc... , but lifeless. At least in my case, like you said spending all day on an intro, don't think the guys in the band would tolerate that!

Lot of truth, I'm just starting to learn some of it. But you touched on something I'm way too guilty of.

Just let it blaze, let 'em hear you.
