Ambassador of DOOM!
At long last I had a Gotoh BB-04 battery box installed into my Squier Vintage Modified '70s Jazz bass, and with parts and labour (routing, drilling, wiring) my friend Steve was able to do it for under $50
I really like the Audere preamp but when fitted to passive basses the battery is hidden inside the control cavity below the preamp, and can be a royal pain to change. Thankfully you get plenty of warning with the level test light built into the preamp, so you are never stuck trying to do it on stage, but it is still annoying. So really glad that Steve could put this finishing touch on my bass for an affordable price. After routing the cavity for the battery box and drilling a connecting passage to the control cavity under the preamp he basically replaced the battery wires on the preamp with those coming from the battery box.
The preamp is Vol/Vol, High-Mid/Low-Mid, Treble/Bass stack pots plus the High-Z filter switch.
The funny thing is, having the battery door make it feel more legit as an active bass somehow.
Other mods on this bass are Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickups, full Hipshot hardware - including tuners (Mexican Fender type), Bass Xtender key, and A-style aluminium bridge - and a new nut cut from a Graph Tech TUSQ XL blank to suit Rotosound Steve Harris 50-110 flatwounds (tuned C, F, A#, D#).
