So, we audition this younger fellow - 22 - and he comes in with a Marshall head and single 4X12, two Ibanez RG's and a super simple board with CS-3/DD-3/Volume and Cry Baby. The kid can play anything that Yngwie or Vai can play note for not - and he warmed up on several from both artists. Excellent sweeping technique. very sharp skillset.

Also warmed up on a few Hendrix numbers, so he definitely has a classic rock library of sorts.

But...

We kick off on JP's Breaking The Law and his guitar is so horribly out of tune that he's getting confused as to where we are at. So even when I turn to him and call out the progressions, he's at least a half step sharp, so it's just a sonic mess.

The strange part was he never self-tuned. I had to tell him too. I guess he just doesn't hear it???

And his tuning effort still wasn't really clean. The guitar was still way out of tune and maybe even intonated improperly. It's always the guys with Floyd's....seriously....always out of tune to stellar proportions.

Next, the whole 'Djent-esque' tone just vaporizes as soon as the rest of us kick in....

I was kinda bummed....but playing in the rehearsal studio is always fun...

So I am back to playing all the guitars parts myself, at least for now...

I’ve watched some of my band mates on worship team live and die by their tuner. I’m not claiming to have perfect pitch or anything remotely close. But I can hear when something just isn’t right on my guitar. Even if the tuner says I’m spot on. That’s when one has to manually tweak the tuners a smidgion. Especially on the G and B string. I find myself tuning those two about a 1/2 cent flat so when I fret them I go natural rather than sharp. I’ve heard it said the human ear can detect sharp easier than it can detect flat.

Tuning is important, especially with my ear... :-)

I tune stretched - like a piano. I intonate top E slightly sharp at the octave. Notes played above the 12th fret sound better in tune that way. About three cents does it. And for the bottom E I intonate the same 3 cents high, but tune it true at the octave, so the open string is slightly low. Again, I found this gives a better sounding note.

Interesting!

You know, intonation is a super important to me. My system is unorthodox I guess, but I do it like this.

I strike a note then bring the string to pitch. I then check for proper intonation at frets 3, 5 & 7.

I don't really worry about where the 12 fret is...

When have some hourly rental places around Boston, but the gear is pretty much garbage. I'll usually drag my own amp along for a "dress rehearsal."

I would imagine that's kind of common when stuff gets used like a rental car. This place has pretty nice stuff. The VIP room is stocked with Friedmann amps...

Pedal for me. A few reasons. I feel they do a better job. I can use it to mute my guitar. But the main reason. I’m not OCD on much, but I refuse to clamp anything to my head stock.

Korg Pitchblack....my PB-01 is MIJ....best tuner ever....I can't recall when I got it...it almost seems as I was born with it....I would perform without anything else, but I love being in tune. I am obsessed with pitch.
