Are you working on any cover songs

One of the bands I gig with from time to time has a pretty consistent set list. I often work on these:

Alone - Heart (We play it a half-step lower than the original. Our female vocalist plays the keys on this song and nails the vocal part.)

Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash (Actually, we've worked up our own rock-n-roll version of that song. It sounds more like rock-a-billy and less like country. I'd use a Gretsch if I had one. But, I use my Strat. Go figure!)

Sharp Dressed Man - ZZ Top (I play the main guitar solo, but our male vocalist comps the outro on harmonica. I think Billy Gibbons would approve!)

Respect - Aretha Franklin

Dancin' In The Street - Martha and the Vandellas

I Feel Good - James Brown

Highway 20 Ride -Zach Brown (the acoustic guitar part is actually rather challenging on this one. It sounds simple, but there is a gentle, rolling feel to it that is important to capture. It sounds better on a nylon-strung guitar than a steel-strung guitar.)

Mama's Broken Heart - Miranda Lambert

Free Fallin' - Tom Petty

Don't Stop Believin' - Journey

Heart Breaker - Pat Benatar

Don't Stop - Fleetwood Mac

Seven Bridges Road - Eagles

Where the Streets Have No Name - U2 (I get my quarter note + dotted-eighth dual delay on with this song! Plus, our male vocalist really likes this song.)

Smoke On the Water - Deep Purple (I change this up from the original, a bit. The rest of the band humors me and lets me have a little fun with my penchant for '80s metal. I use my Jackson with this song and give it a little bit of an '80s hair-band vibe. Yes, I use a mid-scooped distortion, my Floyd Rose, and double hammer-ons! @gball would hate it! @Robert Herndon would love it!)

Songs we may add:

Livin' On a Prayer - Bon Jovi
You Give Love a Bad Name - Bon Jovi
Paranoid - Black Sabbath
Here I Go Again - Whitesnake (This is on the edge of our vocalist's range, so we may have to de-tune to play it).

We'd do some AC/DC songs, but the the vocal parts are out of our male vocalist's range. I may suggest doing "It's a Long Way (to the Top if You Wanna Rock and Roll)". He could probably do that, and he could play the bagpipe part on harmonica.

I also may suggest "Ace of Spades." Our bass player would LOVE to do that one!

As a beginner/ maybe into intermediate player, I play parts of songs I like, but also use them as specific training / skill drills.

I need to learn whole songs (at least the rhythm, and some simple leads) through and get serious playing along to the record.

Lately its been a lot of the following
Some of it pretty well, some of it just beginner-ish level ability stumbling, and a lot of in between.

Highway to Hell
Hells Bells
Girl's Got Rhythm
Number of the Beast
The Trooper
Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner
The Boys are Back in Town
Lick and a Promise
And I Love Her
Since I've Been Loving You (Intro)

I like learning covers. I've learned many. I burn thru them, and then don't play them again though. I just think it's good to learn different styles and techniques.

What I like to do with covers, is take out a certain lick or pattern and use it in my practice routine. This has really helped me become a better guitarist.

Just a few that I'm working on now. It's a constantly evolving list.

AC/DC, Bad Boy Boggie
AC/DC, Beating around the Bush
Megadeth, This was my life.
The Cult, Fire Woman
Joe Satriani, House of Bullets

It's funny you should ask....I've had the ditto for a couple years now. I used it briefly when I got it, then tossed it in a drawer. I pulled it out about two months ago and have been using it daily. I guess I had to figure out the proper way to use it, and now that I have I love it. It's great for the one man band, but I've been using it to learn scales, and lead riffs. The ditto is cool... I recommend it for sure.

Very cool Brother. Yes my friend the thing is many have problems using them, then they get frustrated quit playing them or sell them off. plus you need to have some good timing. but once you know how to work them, a great tool to help you learn. By the way nice set up.(y)
