S**t, f***k and other nasty words!

I screwed up something in my back at work yesterday. I bent down to pick up something, nice and easy, didn't lift anything heavy, no sudden movements, nothing silly or dangerous, but, BANG!!!, I suddenly had pain shooting down my leg and lower back so bad I could hardly move. I barely managed to get up the stairs from the brewhouse up to the brewery offices to get someone to take over for me. One of my colleagues drove me home. I popped some paracetamol and tried to rest for the remainder of the day. I'm not better today, so I'm off to the doctor's. I'm pretty sure he'll just tell me to take it easy and stay home for a few days, but I need to get the papers so I can get paid sick leave. I've hurt my back before, spraining muscles and stuff, but this is worse by orders of magnitude. Really makes me sympathize with people with permanent back injuries. I'm completely useless, and had to have help putting on my socks and tying my shoes this morning. God dammit, I nearly piss my pants whenever I have to go to the bathroom because getting up off the sofa takes so frickin' long!

Sorry, I just had to vent. I'm pretty sure I'll be fine in a few days, but this f****ng HURTS, man!

Dude--- been there ----threw mine out once standing up from the toilet! (bog) --Live with 2 herniated discs (from one or many of the old injuries/accidents)

totally sucks -- do you have chiropractic options there?? they do wonders for mine ---also wear a brace to sleep and often times I have to sleep on the floor to "straighten it out"

totally sucks --- hope you have a quick recovery

We have a physiotherapist who comes to the brewery every now and then. The doctor told me to take it easy for two weeks and gave me some pills (basically paracetamol and diclofenac). I guess I'll be ok in a few days. I recon I'm just getting old...

Ditto here sir. Many years ago I gave myself a seriously strained back muscle. I believe the official term was muscle spasm. I had already been dealing with a sore back, but when it got serious was middle of the night. Had gotten up to take a leak. Just about didn’t make it back to bed before I basically collapsed. Next morning, trip to the Doc. Some size large ibuprofen was prescribed along with some low stress back stretching exercises. Flat on my back for a couple days. Fortunately, it was a Friday so I only missed one day of work. But to this day. I’ve never hurt as bad as I did that morning.

Take it easy for a couple days. Listen to the good doctor. If the Doc doesn’t mention it. Google search back stretching exercises. They’re easy and they do work.

I hope yours is a sever strain-- if the meds are helping it--- then it is most likely that -- no pain meds effect the disc issues--I was told to have surgery 10 years ago---
I do NOT like the idea of them cutting on me---with lasers -- near my spine--doc has a bad day-- you are crippled for life-- period-(gota sign forms promising NOT to sue them before the surgery) --- nope-- Ill deal with pain--Ill go to therapy -- and ill figure it out---not ending up in a wheel chair cause some a$$hat doctor "slips" up...

IT sucks first time it happened I was 6 months of therapy and agony till better--- then a day or two--last time it was a month and 3 or 4 therapy visits--but I never missed a day of work-- I move slower I cuss more and am a right WANKER to be around--- but I keep on trucking----

Hope your back on the road soon Gahr!!! I dont wish this pain on ANYONE!

I injured my back in 2003 during a SWAT training event for the police department I was working for back then. I spent 6 weeks off work on meds, both anti-inflammatory agents and pain. Finally went to a chiropractor on my own (paid for out of my own pocket) and he fixed it in 30 minutes. No kidding!

Every now and then - for no apparent reason - it will act up almost exactly as Gahr has described. I go to my chiropractor and I walk out instantly better.

I've gotten to where I can reset it myself in an emergency, by laying flat on the floor and twisting my hips as close to 90°as possible, but everyone is different and is injured differently.

I would definitely get examined by a chiropractor.

Blessings be upon you, Gahr!!!!

You have my sympathies Gahr. Hope it's just a sprain and you're back to brewin' in no time.
I've had my share of back issues as well after 35 years of heavy equipment wrenching.
But always minor as my chiropractor always manages to crack me back into shape.

The wife woke up one day last year & couldn't walk.
Went to the docs, had the usual xrays, MRI's etc. she had a herniated disc that was somehow causing injury to her sciatic nerve.
She suffered with this condition for two weeks, taking pain meds, nerve meds finally having laser back surgery.
It was amazing, she was walking later that day, pain free.
Insurance wouldn't pay a dime of the almost 20k bill because she hadn't lived with the condition long enough.
According to them she was supposed to suffer for three months.

Good luck Gahr, rest & recuperation is good medicine.

For a while, I could never comprehend how some people would describe their back pains as so severe to the point that they cannot walk. I would think to myself: "Oh, you're just acting like a little cry baby!" Then one day my ignorance caught up to me... Yup, I could barely make it the bed to lie down.

Our bodies are precariously balanced, and it doesn't take much to injure our backs. Just standing in the kitchen and reaching to grab a fork can spaz-out your back!

@Gahr , I hope you feel better real soon.... Back problems really suck!

@Gahr
Let some expletives fly for me too!
Hope you heal up quick and it is not a sign of the start of chronic back pain.

My low back hurts almost all the time in some way or another.
I have a few distinct different flavors of pain.

I have one of those inversion tables, I need to use it more often.
It is most effective for a certain type of pain.

My dogs think I am some kind of kissing piñata; keep trying to lick my face and bald head!
It is good for ab workout / crunches too; which I also need to do more often / regularly.
It was only @$80 USD (at the time about 3 years ago) delivered Amazon (which I use reluctantly but sometimes it is necessary).

Back issues are the worst! I really hope yours is minor and you heal up quickly!

I have three bad discs in my cervical spine (neck) and two in my lumbar (waist). My back hurts all day every day...it's just something I
had to learn to deal with. Because like Adrian, I refuse to let someone perform surgery on my spine when I have to sign something
saying if they cripple me it's okay!

Also the neck surgery would severely limit my ability to turn my head...

Getting old is painful...

I had it happen too. I reached down to pick up something behind my feet. Horrible pain! It turns out I have sciatica. It hurts to stand still too long or to sit straight. I never thought I'd get sciatica in my early 50s. It doesn't go away. They gave me great drugs to put me out if I want to use them. I wish you way better luck then me.

ITs the damn LES PAULS -- they weigh too much!!! BUWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

mine is because of a tilted pelvis (again attributed to a long gone accident-- probably one of the totaled cars in my youth and you just "shook it off") -- and the best way to describe is -- the FOUNDATION of my spine is crooked-- the vertebrae and muscles at about L 3-4 "adjusted" over time to hold up the structure ---but age and gravity have over ridden them -- and now---the "surgery" (IMHO is flawed in its concept) removes the SOFT tissue between the vertebrae so it doesnt pinch the nerves and cause pain --- however -- that WEAKENS the overal structure MORE (stupid) and just puts off future surgeries more pain and eventual removal of the discs and fusing the vertebrae
uhm -- (min total 3 surgeries in a lifetime) -- 3 opportunities for them to permanently cripple me-- or get an infection-- or ......yeah -- nope --
until the pain puts me in a wheel chair they can keep their laser scalpel holstered!

That's almost not a joke. Each of the two times I have pulled muscles in my back working out the problem was made worse by playing guitar, because I always stand when I play. The muscles took a long time to heal and I had residual sciatica that lasted months. Now I do specific exercises to help strengthen my back in the hope it won't happen again.

Gahr, I am so sorry to hear how painful your back is feeling right now. As early as 17 I began aches and back tighness, then around 23, I experienced likely almost exactly the pains you feel right now. I wound up on muscle relaxers, plus therapy which included a "rack-like" device to pull my lower torso the opposite direction of my upper. After awhile, I guess this helped. Sadly my low back pain has never gone away for me in almost 40 years. As, I am in no hurry to get any surgery, I am trying to relieve my current rough spell with chiropractor treatments, ice, stretching and not lifting too heavy.

I sure hope doctor's can bring you relief fast and that the worst of it will not trouble you to the severity you are experiencing now.
