I hope that y'all have a great 4th, even our non-USA family members. The 4th is all about freedom. To me freedom is not about doing whatever you want. Freedom is about having the opportunity to do the right thing. Be free my friends, be free.

I thought the 4 of July was all about getting from the 3rd of July to the 5th of July...

Happy Independence Day to those it applies to and Happy July 3rd to those it does not.

Happy Independence day. But please don't forget 3rd September. That's the day you actually got independence, rather than the day you decided it would be a nice thing to have.

Lots of Americans know the significance of 01 September (Germany invaded Poland) and 02 September (VJ Day), but rare is the individual who knows the significance of 03 September. In 1783, three American peace commissioners and one British commissioner Richard Oswald signed the Treaty of Paris . This treaty between Great Britain and United States of America ended the American Revolution and formally secured American independence from Great Britain.

The treaty was negotiated and then signed in two parts. A preliminary treaty between the United States and Great Britain was signed in 1782 (the subject of Benjamin West’s unfinished work above). It was agreed at the time that the treaty would go into effect only upon the conclusion of a separate peace between Britain and France, our ally in the Revolutionary War. This was duly accomplished, and the United States and Great Britain signed the final treaty in Paris in 1783.

In his painting, Benjamin West planned to portray all seven of the diplomats who were present at the signing of the 1782 preliminary treaty: American peace commissioners, John Jay, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Henry Laurens; secretary to the American delegation William Temple Franklin (Benjamin Franklin’s grandson); British commissioner Richard Oswald; and Oswald’s secretary Caleb Whitefoord. Although Whitefoord cooperated with West, Oswald refused to pose and West never finished his painting.

I did not know this.
Nazi Propaganda. Nice try.
Next you will tell me Christmas Day is based on some winter solstice Pagan ritual and not the actual Birthday of Jesus.

LOL kidding.

Blow up lots of fireworks if you can! (New Jersey sucks sometimes)

But be careful out there folks:
Dont be "that guy"

Actually July 4th is when we declared our independence and it was not until Sept 30 1782 that you guys on that side of the pond took us seriously.

Just like a divorce, the relationship was over long before the judge signed the paper

Unfortunately just declaring independence doesn't mean a thing. You have to earn it - which you did on 3rd September 1783. The 1782 thing was just a step along the way.

The revolutionary war was really an Anglo-French affair - the States were involved peripherally. And of course you Californian chaps weren't involved at all - you were Mexicans.

I was not involved at all. I wasn't even born yet. I may be old, but not that old.

As it happens, I am related to Benedict Arnold on my mother's side and Francis Marion on my father's. Being born in one of the original 13 colonies, and surrounded by artifacts, we called it furnishings, my sense of patriotism was instilled early on. A victim of the McCarthy diaspora, I spent several years in Canada and took great pride in being part of the Commonwealth. It is my belief that we are witnessing a great upheaval in the world because of the freedom that all common people desire and all tyrants fear. I will not be around for the denouement, but the direction of modern civilization has been toward more personal freedom.
On a selfish note, I love big fireworks displays, but hate the incessant barrage of noise makers employed by my celebrant neighbors, especially the .45 caliber ones.

When you say commonwealth, do you meant the British one that Canada is part of, or the four Commonwealths of the USA? (Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Virginia and Massachusetts). As for McCarthy, your country is labouring under that evil yoke to this day. He single-handedly set back American cultural development a hundred years. I wish I shared your optimism about the direction of modern civilisation. We've had the enlightenment and all the great things that flowed from it, but I see ever more signs that the world is sliding back into superstitious savagery. Islam appears to be quite serious about the Caliphate, for example.

Yes and I wish that our governments had been blessed with the vision to see that dropping walkmans and rock n roll cassettes on the worlds hotspots would have had more positive results that our insane policy of arming all sides. That said, the jihadists are a small aberrant sect of Islam. Sadly, the barbarism of the dark ages is not extinct, but it can and must be fought with the light of science.

Well then happy Canada Day tomorrow, to all our northern neighbors.
Happy 4th to all our Stateside folks...
And a great mini history lesson Grant, thanks for that.

Always something to like on this forum.

I like to say that the U.S. is the only other country that I've ever visited in my life besides living in Canada. I've been down to Disney World in 1972 when it was new. What a great experience that was! My dad lived in Detroit and Windsor for so many years. He had duel citenship so he was both Canadian and American. He died in November 2001 at the age of 85. He was the best father I've ever had.
