This si a serious guitar for serious musicians

I would like to know why some fellas like these very difficult to adjust dog ear P90s over the body mounted variety. I particularly want an answer from esge, who I am ssecretly angry at for doing this to his SG Jr, which I was gassing over. Luckily, this made J Goo and Hack like it more, so maybe they can give an answer.

FYI, I would guess that Sam Ash is not doing well and needs all the sales they can get. They seem to clinging to a brick and morter business model and not doing that well either, at least in my area.

for what its worth RVA ive no answere for ya.BUT i will tell you that the pickup heigth of all Dog ear pups are not created equal.the Bare Knuckles are higher than the Duncan Antiquities P90 ive had.not sure about the stock Gibson P90 Dog ear.i guess i like it cause OCD says ya take it how it is and live with it hahaha. AND ive been fooking around with pickup heigth on some guitars and ive got some 3 16ths or more from top of pole pieces to the bottom of strings and hell they still sound great.maybe better.if you look at Gibsons Humbucker adjustment specs its real close to the strings.I set them at 3 16ths from pole piece to bottom of strings.sounds great so some of that is hog wash. id rather have them a little farther away than to close.

plus the Gretsch Filtertron i put in one of my JRs needs a little bit more foam in the pup cavity to bring it up aways.its like 4 16ths or 1/4 inch with a barely 5k ohm magnet and it still sounds fantastic .Look at how the Reverend Billy G has his pups set.i even recently lowered the stock Tex Mex Tele bridge pup on my Tele to 3 16ths cause it sounded crappy.the neck pup on these 50s reissue teles are non adjustable at 3 16ths too

You can set them wherever you want, and that is the point. It is nice to have options and with dog ears, you have to jump through hoops for an adjustment if the screws do not do it. Hell, I routed a Gibby R6 so I could have height adjustment! After I found the sweet spot, it came alive, which was much lower than where it had been

What i dont like in a Pup RVA is to have the gain only on at 10 or so or a amp with no gain knob at all and just a volume and with the guitar volume wide open its distorted already.hottest pickup i got is a Duncan Antiquities humbucker in a JR at 8.5 k ohms and its pushin it for me.Ive come to like tbe lower output Pups cause yes ill admit i like some clean tone and you can always pour the gain to them. soooooo.ya im no help lol lol

your right RVA i agree. but those silly JRs just look more ahhhh, natural ill call it with a Dog ear. SO you found lowering your pup in the R6 it sounded better ???? what im talkin bout man.what im talkin bout :)

Plus the Gretsch Filtertron pup adjusts like a soap bar too unless you use the English mount they call it but i didnt monkey with that.its screwed into the wood .

Yes, the bridge really needed to be lowered and it opened up thr neck range and dynamics. More important, I was finally able to get the action I like without hitting the bridge cover

But back to the task at hand thats a hell of a deal for one of those Gibson JRs. They look really nice and im not even looking on there website because ive no will power sometimes ya know and i got JRs layin all over the place also hahaha.

YOU mean this?

Shoot man it LOOKS better----and the BK pup is AMAZING --- low hum for P90 and ALL RAWK TONE....sits right up and snug to the strings where it should be.....

My thinking in the JR. department--- especially a set neck--- is simply its gotta be made right from the start......if it aint -----your fooked---
If it is its awesome........
Case in Point

A dog eared Jr thumbs its nose at the minutia of techno babble and micro adjustment -----it just SCREAMS ---STFU and ROCK!

hows that for an answer?

of course the one in the first post ADS craps tons of techno tronicals and chip boards............---thanks Henry ...........

Plus if one buys one of those Gibby single cut JRs a soupbar pickup will fit in the Dogear route if ya dont like the Dogear. Ya got to think outside the box here sometimes folks or you dont come up with this 20170710_165652.jpg
