    Strat Build

I made the jig out of an old wooden miter box. I use an embedded feeler gauge as an indexing pin. The sled has a 25.5 scale on one side and 24.75 on the other. I cut them myself using pre-slotted fretboards as templates. The saw is from Lowe's or maybe Home Depot. The depth stop is stuck on...

    Strat Build

More Fretboard day! The Fretboard got slotted and years on the sides. It just needs a little cleaning up on one side and around the overhang. Here it is being slotted: Here is just double stick taped to the neck:

    Strat Build

No shame in kit building or "partscasting." I just originally got started with scratch building right from the beginning, so I never saw the needed for the other. For me it started out as a financial thing: wood was relatively cheap and my father had a complete woodworking shop. So I bought a...

    Strat Build

On the fretboard radius jig. There's a whole thread on it here somewhere. I even posted some video of it in action earlier today.

I decided the strat deserved it's own build thread so I'm putting everything here now. Templates: Body:

    Fretboard Radius Jig

To be fair, I didn't invent it. I bought plans for it. But I did improve it by adding the sled drive mechanism and dual action crank.

    Fretboard Radius Jig

Yes, manual crank. It is a little wobbly in use, but there is extra camera shake.

    Fretboard Radius Jig

I finally got around to shooting some video of the fretboard radius jig in action. It's only a test piece that I was using to check something out before putting some cocobolo in it for real but you can get the idea.

Thread From Another Forum Shocked Me...

I'm sad to say that I rarely play. I play in spurts occasionally, but honestly, I'd usually rather be in my shop building than in my studio playing. :(

    Modified V Build

I'm not using plywood. I laminated a body blank out of poplar planks. Three .75 inch planks in the middle sandwiched on the top and back by 2 planks each which had been milled down to .5 inch. The result was a 1.75 inch body blank.

    Modified V Build

So I have recently gotten back to building. I am building my first strat-style guitar. The body is a 7 piece poplar laminate. The neck is maple. I am currently thinking about a cocobolo fretboard. I have also gotten back to work on the V. I have been doing some serious sanding in the body and...

    On the hunt

This is a great post, Col. I have already bought the guitar. It is in good to very good condition and plays well.

    NGD - Ovation Celebrity CC057

I love the look of those little sound holes, but this one is fine. I don't have a "great" ear but it sounds really good to me even unplugged. I put extra light phosphor bronze strings on it today and it is playing great.

I hear that! I will just wear a strap even when sitting down. So far I am really liking both the sound and the feel of the guitar.
