And yet, another new old amp day. More DST content.

With all the stuff going on at the house right now, I really didn't want to spend a bunch of cash. Especially since I really don't need anything, even though there are a couple of odd things I am trying to get my hands on. However, this week Bob D. put up one of the amps he kept for himself for sale on the book of face. I was the first person to respond. I was lucky enough to see it a few minutes after he posted it. Also had cash kicking around.

So, what is it you ask? A DST Engineering DST-15 from 2009. It is Bob's take on a Vox AC-15. But, with a few different things going on. First, it's housed in a beautiful Bloodwood and Yellow Heart cabinet. It has an EF86 tube for the Normal Channel, and it has a Top Boost "Brilliant" Channel. Since Bob loves Ampeg Reverb, he put an Ampeg reverb tank and circuit in the amp that works with both channels, unlike the reverb channel of an AC-30 which is designated to it's own channel. The speaker is an Eminence Red Coat "Red Fang." It is also switchable from 15 to 4 watts, and has external speaker jacks. I've been playing it with a Strat and my ES-335 today, and it sounds fantastic. I love the reverb, and have had it on all day and night. From minimal to less than moderate, but always on. And it sounds absolutely fantastic.

This was the style amp that I originally wanted when I first met him, but didn't think it would be loud enough, so I went for the DST-30 instead. Psyched that I now have one. This puts me up to five DST amps now. We were talking about me maybe doing a DST fan page of the Book of Face in the future. He also took some time to show me how to bias my Solera and U34 amps.

Impeccable workmanship as always in a DST amplifier.

What a shame that Bob Dettorre ain't building amps anymore. What is he doing lately?

Congrats on a very sweet amp...

Like everyone the past few years, he’s had a hectic time. Now, he’s a grand dad and enjoying life. He’s talking about maybe building amps again, but on a smaller and more custom scale. He’s considering retiring from his real job soon, and wants to do something fun to keep him busy.

Looks good , I must admit I never heard of one.
They were a small builder north of Boston. They made a name for themselves in the early 2000s when the 18 watt craze was going on. Bob D. (the D in DST) likes mashing things up with his designs, as he really likes Hiwatts and Ampegs. They made a MarWatt 18 watt amp that was their big seller at the time. Billy Gibbons bought two, and uses the amp with two 10" speakers as his dressing room amp. He also has one at his studio with two 12" speakers. Along with the 18 watt stuff, they made several other amps ranging from Vox clones (with a bit of extra stuff), all the way up to 100 and 200 watt Marshall/Hiwatt/Fender hybrids depending on your taste. If you wanted your Fender Bassman 50 turned into a Dumble type amp, he would do that too. He retired about ten years ago, as he had a real job and many family obligations to attend to. The amp business was just for fun.

Because I am lucky enough to live a few blocks away from Bob, I've ended up with some pretty cool amps. The only amp I bought when they were still in business was the AC-30 clone (done to Rory Gallagher/Taste era specifications), and all the rest have been when he decided to make some room in his basement or living room.

A good Billy Gibbons article here. Very detailed!!!!

Whenever Billy or ZZ Top are playing in the area, Bob usually gets invited to lunch, then to hang out at the show backstage. In the dressing room, is one of these two amps. The other is in Billy's studio. These are the two amps Billy had custom made for himself.
