Wondering if anyone else has experience with Seymour Duncan Blackouts. I have a Jackson 7 string with them and I was looking into having it setup for drop G or drop G flat. Then I started thinking, these pickups have a fair bit of bottom end. So I’m wondering if down tuning on these pickups that far would make it muddy, perhaps stick to drop C flat?

I am of no help here Matt, as far as I have gone down is D, and my pick ups are the invader’s..
 
I’ve never played a 7string. So take this for what it’s worth.
I would think the low B string would give enough bottom for my taste.
To me dropping down past a step and a half (G#) would make me think the strings would flop around too much without a thicker set. Also, I’d be concerned with it getting muddy sounding, especially if your pups are already bottom heavy.
My 2 cents.
But then again, I am working off what I know of a 6 string.

I already went and got a thicker gauge for it for down tuning and I think it’s a 25.5 scale, could be wrong but I’m 90% sure it’s around that. So floppy strings already accounted for.

It’s really that potential to be muddy that I’m concerned about, so I was just curious if anyone on here has tried drop tuning that low on blackouts or a similar voiced pickup.

Alternatively when I get ready to take it to my tech I could probably just drop the b string and chugging an open note and seeing what it sounds like.

Testing it out costs nothing.
 
I use the ahb3, Mick Thompson emty Blackouts in both of my explorers. Both tuned Drop B. They are not muddy whatsoever. They are my favorite active pickups ever.

Now I did have a set of the regular ahb1 blackouts in one of my explorers for a while, they are inherently dark and bottom fat pickups. (Which is why they have revamped them a couple times)
I did find them a tiny bit muddy. But.... They are what they are at any tuning.

I'm curious which set you have? Edit: I looked it up, you have the Ahb1 pups.

Also.... Given the output of those, I would also suggest you can drop the bass and increase the mids and treble on your amp to compensate quite a bit for that.

In my head I know Jackson matches their pickups pretty well....and.....most people are buying 7 strings to drop to crazy low tunings.... Those pickups were made for drop tunings. It's gonna sound fine.

Thanks for the help! I think it’s because it’s a signature guitar that I kinda questioned it a bit, I don’t think (could be wrong) that trivium tends to drop to aggressively low tunings that often. I mostly play in drop D but wanted to experiment with drop G flat.
