Jazzmaster Build

With the weather turning nice here in Southern Ontario, it’s time to build another guitar.

My Frankenstein build is on the back burner while I continue to research the scratches and wear that it had just prior to it’s red coat of paint.

I have amassed parts for a custom Jazzmaster. A local guy had a brand new, unfinished alder Jazzmaster body for sale on a local online market place. He also had the matching black H-H pick guard. I picked them up for well below the price of getting them direct from Warmoth AND didn’t have to pay the exorbitant shipping costs.

I also picked up a new maple Mighty Mite right hand reversed Strat neck with the large ‘70’s headstock. This should turn out to be very cool!

The body has now been finished in a dark red mahogany stain and has about 8-10 coats of tung oil. The oil finish was a long drawn out process and I am not completely happy with the result but c’est la vie! I had it hanging in the garage to fully cure and in a moment of lapsed situational awareness, I hit my head on it and knocked it down. It now has several scrapes and marks on it that are just going to have to stay there as I can’t be bothered to try to sand out and do over again.

I have also acquired an SD Jazz and JB set of humbuckers to get installed.

I will upload photos as soon as I get some taken.

While I was installing the rear string ferrules last evening, I realized that I had forgotten to order the small string ferrules that go on the front of the body. I placed an order last night at my go-to Canadian supplier (NexGen Guitars) near Ottawa, Ontario only to find out that they are in rough shape due to a very severe storm we had on Saturday, May 21. They were unable to open their warehouse for almost a week due to downed trees and a long power outage. During the same storm, I had a 50' tree toppled in my front yard. Miraculously it didn't hit anything.

Anyway, my order may be a bit delayed as NextGen tries to get caught up on backlogged orders due to the temporary warehouse closure.

Thank you Robert. I think that it is going to look great with the black pick guard and maple neck.

I'm looking for a similar color for my Gibson SG scratch build, like this:

The finish on this Chinese Gretsch inspired me.

I'm thinking of using amber and varying shades of brown and black stain to duplicate this effect, topping it off with boiled linseed oil and top coating with DuPont 380S Lacquer Clear.

A quick update.
I received my order from NextGen Guitars and was pleasantly surprised that it didn't take as long as feared.
I have installed the front and rear ferrules and have shielded the cavities with paint. I have always used foil tape in the past but I thought I would try shielding paint this time. This is what I used:

It is nickel so we will see how well it works.
