Amps with pedals. Out of curiosity.

As in all things -- variety is the spice of life.

it is POSSIBLE to have all tube....tube hybrid and SS amps --- all living in harmony (or tortured crap playing HELL) --- only 2 pedals used (on a daily basis)
shown justto the right of the blackstar--- there is a cheap reverb pedal and a HUSH noise reducer pedal..........the reverb only for the Lil Sexy, Marshall Master Lead and the Fender bassbreaker 007 as they dont come with reverb-- the rest have it built in

The VOX VT20x has hundreds of models and pedals and online software with many more..........Pandoras Box of TIME SUCK I call it .....its reserved for those cold (55F) drizzle winter days when I just need to distract myself...................
Rest of the time its the Blackstar, Bassbreaker or a Marshalldepednign on my "mood" --- the PEAVEY gets fired up when no one is home 80 watts SS (TBTH I think they UNDER estimate that) it gets STUPID loud !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where did the Orange GOOOOO?

I do use a cleanly set OD pedal to boost the front on a couple amps. I am a higher gain guy.
Is it the wrong amp then? No, I do not think so. I predominately use an OD in front of my Marshall 800 series, the 4010 and the new Studio Classic.
So if the gain is not enough for me for most stuff, why do I have them? They have a raw, mdrange grind that is very hard to duplicate with other amps. I love the sound of a smokin 800 but the boost adds more gain as it were amd some EQ up front. Which I require. Tonally they still sound essentially the same.

I have used a cleanly set OD in front of channel 2A or B mode with the 6101 plus with the TSL it tightens it up amd less compression but more gain.
I do not use the pedal for distortion directly just to boost level going into amp.

Its all relative really. Very few amps in this world are gonna give you the sound you want right from the guitar. Some will such as if you want a straight rock sound, a bluesy simple tone, a bright clean etc. But when you're after something such as higher gain, its 50/50 your amp is gonna give you the sound you want or if your into spacy tones. Again, some amps are perfect on their own though.

But as for myself? The JCM2000 DSL50, JCM900 2500 SLX and Mode Four all can go straight up for the sound i typically play. At most, i clean boost the front end with an overdrive to tighten it up at a lower volume. There are certain times I use an FX processor ( Line 6 X3 live) but when i typically use it, im robbing the amps preamp by going into the FX return only, making my amp a power amp and the processor the preamp. Thats if im going for a mock sound of something else

My amps are close to what I want to sound like. I enjoy how they sound without anything added. Then I put a boost up front and they really sound great.

What gets me perplexed is that I read about guitar players spending countless hours and hundreds of dollars buying NOS tubes to put in their heads, which maybe changes the sound a tiny bit, or they'll spend countless hours trying different mic placements or combinations to get the perfect sound into the mix. But then they'll get defensive when someone adds a clean boost up front, or adds an EQ pedal in the Loop.

We're a funny group of people. :D
