Phase

Interesting situation reared its head this week re: recording guitars.

I use a Boss BR 800 digital recorder as my audio device, usually go from balanced line out of attenuator to balanced line in on audio device.

Upon RTFM I realized I can unbalanced to an input for instrument level , thought I'd try it out.

Recorded a few guitar parts, liked how the levels were hitting Reaper.

Upon playback it sounded like I was using a phaser? WTH, no effects were used.

So, using some of Reapers phase tools I identified items recorded with the instrument levels out of phase, the balanced inputs had zero issues.

I guess the pre amps for the balanced inputs prevented this.

Anyone else ever run into issues like these?

Just really weird, was pedaling the open E string, swear it sounded like I had a Phase 90 at about half wet mix?

I think I have it sorted, but wiser minds may know of other reasons for this behavior.

Chime in if you have ever had, or heard of this happening.

I'm monitoring this thread, as I anticipate running into similar issues during my journey.

Learn what I can now and maybe avoid frustration.

Sorry Steve, I have nothing useful for you lol
I don't want to volunteer anyone, ever lol
We have a extremely knowledgeable member that has walked me through the issues I've encountered.

I'm sure as you run across different things on your own he will chime in, he's very generous with his time and knowledge.

Have fun, I'm lovin this stuff .

Turn down all possible effects sends, monitor sends and aux sends etc.
Then try the playback again, does it still happen?

Yes, when I use the "guitar" input, but using the balanced output and input on audio device it doesn't happen.

Has to be something to do with that input on the device? That's the only time it happens.

It doesn't pose a problem, since I have a get around, just odd. Don't think that bass/ guitar input is doing what Boss advertises.

Post script: definitely no effects, boosts etc.., only routing is from audio device to daw?

That is odd true.

I think Boss has something on the dedicates guitar input, probably wouldn't notice it if I turned on the modeling etc..

But no mistake it's on there, or was.
I’m up to page 89 in the manual...sounds like you may have the “insert effects” running somehow...difficult to tell without an audio sample really. Perhaps it defaults to being engaged when you plug in to the instrument input. This button isn’t lit up, is it?(the “cosm effects” button)

You have no idea how worn out that part of my manual is, I'm confident in saying no insert effects, but not to say that easy song feature wasn't on accidentally.
I'm going to try to recreate my "phaser" again.

My gut is telling me that there is something funkified with that guitar/ bass input. Maybe some sort of buffer, pre amp. Not knowledgeable enough in electronics.

But sure do know what a Phase 90 sounds like.

Get back to you in a few.

Findings as follows; direct out of the attenuator balanced out to audio device balanced in, no issues.
Un- balanced out of attenuator to guitar level specific input, sounds like a Phase 90.

And now I have my excuse that I've been looking for to purchase a interface!

Just odd as all get out? Definitely no insert or input effects, all disabled. No song sketch either?

It's actually not that bad of a understated effect like that lol I just hardly ever use the EVH always on low key phaser.
