So...Give me your best opinions on different bass pickups that sound good on a fretless. I already love the jazz bass, but am thinking about a future project and want to try something different. Thanks in advance!

I had been thinking about the possibility of a DiMarzio model one for a neck pickupand a will power neck pup for middle or bridge. Also considering a pair of gfs power rails for use on a bass. I'm bad about over analyzing things. Also, with all the different p bass pups out there, which ones have the right frequency response for fretless?

its clearer than a real Gibbo Mudbucker but can get down right muddy if you cut the tone entirely --

I "THINK" the Artec ones are very similar and you can get a set (Mudbucker and mini hum) for les than the Dimarzzio

here is a similar configuration to mine but in a Fender

Almost any pickup. My fretless basses are a PJ where i like the P better and a MM style pickup which is really great. But i can well imagine something like Thunderbuckers or (yes!!!) PAF guitar humbuckers in a fretless instrument. Or the minihumbucker from my Gibson EB-11.

You should keep in mind the string spacing: Gibson like basses are narrower; the outer strings have the same distance as in their guitars. Which means that you can use guitar pickups even those with 6 poles (i tried, and Fender did it too, with a strat PU in the Bronco bass))

Thunderbuckers have blades which are wide enough for 7enderish string spacing.

Why did i say almost? i cannot imagine well single coils with *very* pronounced treble end like the Tele PUs (which need to be tamed in a bass anyway) or even the single coil lipsticks in a fretless bass.

............damn you Fretless --- Im looking at my Thunderbird........and wondering "why do I need these frets then????"

FYI --- the Epiphone Thundirbird Humbuckers are GREAT pickups and again can be scored very "cost effectively"

The mudbucker (just had another objective little noodle---) is darker than the "P" pup in mine-- but I dont recall it being as dark as the Epiphone EB-3 now-- thats long scale -- Vs Short scale -- also -- and Gibson VS Epi -- and flats (currently) vs round wounds --fretted vs fretless---.,....and....and ....Ugh

---------------------------------oh SNAP!-----------------------------

Dont forget about ACTIVE!!!!!

Wow! Looks like my horizons are expanding! As far as string spacing goes, Schaller makes a bridge with space adjustable saddles, so I'm not scared of mixing gibbo and fender. Adrian, that p bass was flat out sexy!
Thanks, Bea and Adrian for your suggestions!

The Warwick bridges allow for string spacing adjustment as well.
