Incoming WIZZ Paul Kossoff set ⭐️

Well after around 2 years of umming and ahhing, I finally pulled the trigger on a set of WIZZ pups during the Black Friday sales that saw me get 25% off which was a deal too good to pass up.
I’v been a loyal OX4 fan and have a PAF set in my LP Standard and another custom wound set in my ‘57 LP Custom that have served me loyally for years but have always wondered what the WIZZ’ would bring to the table. In a weeks time, my questions will be answered.
I run straight into a JTM50 Blackflag clone, no fx or garnish except a THD HotPlate that allows me to get the backend working as it should and work the pup selector and volume/tone knobs to get all the tones I need. Out of all my amps (Vox/Marshall ‘s/boutique builds) the JTM50 is my go-to. It’s the one amp I rely on, so I’m really keen to hear these new pups through it.
Any other WIZZ users here … ?

Thanx for the welcome (y)
I found this site after coming across this awesome thread build by Ivan H - JTM50 Black Flag build, finally under way.
My BlackFlag clone was made by a fellow Aussie from South or Western Australia, who also built some beautiful Les Paul replicas, but I haven’t been able to track him down and was wondering if Ivan could be him or know of him …
I have yet to find such a responsive amp as the JTM50. It can go from beautiful chimey clean tones to a harmonically rich roaring beast at the turn of a volume knob.
I’m interested in how other users run theirs …

Hello !!! Welcome to TTR !! …… He just might be the @ivan H you’re looking for !!!

I have two sets of Wizz humbuckers, one old school A4 PAF set and a GregBilly set with A3 neck & slightly overwound A5 bridge.
Both are absolutely wonderful.

A4 mags tend to be pretty sensitive to differences in winding I think, as well as generally being very true to the sound of the wood. In a good sounding guitar, they sound truly epic - vintagey in the very best way. If the guitar doesn't have lots of personality I've found A4 usually isn't the best choice. Some guitars do best with enhancement; they benefit from pickups that'll add character of their own.

I like the Wizz PAFs and I'm also very fond of my Tom Holmes A4 set.
The PRS McCarty humbuckers use A4s too; they're less dazzling but in the right guitar they can still shine.
A4 works well in the Duncan Custom.

I've heard of some putting A4 into JBs but I haven't tried it myself; the JB doesn't clean up well enough to suit my own taste.

I’ve done a lot of experimenting with different mags (rough cast A5 bridge + A3 neck are favourites of mine), wiring, positions etc. You can truly go deep, down into the rabbit hole with pickups. But if you first haven’t got a good harness with quality pots within +/- 10% tolerance than I feel you’ve shot yourself in the foot before you’ even started. The chain’s only as strong as it’s weakest link.

Yep. Been a fan of Koss’s and Free + Back Street Crawler for a long time. I keep telling myself I have to try a 10 - 52 string gauge just like he did. One day …

BFT Gibson, have you ever tried not bridging the channels and just going straight into the top bright channel? If you haven’t, give it a go and still add in the 2nd channel to taste as it is still in the circuit regardless. It’s how I run mine. 0 Bass, everything else dimed, Vol 1 @ 8 and Vol 2 @ 4 through a 1960AX cab with greenbacks + Eminence 1215 Legend’s in an X pattern. With the hotplate I get every rock tone available. They truly are the holy grail of Marshall amps IMO.

I use my 4 holers bridged..but use the Normal side only to bring bass up. Most times i just dime everything, I have used treble side only & i might sense a bit of bottom end misssing..i mean not much but i think i can bring the lower mid range up a hair.

Do sometime play the Normal side only with a strat...gets very bassman like. Get it the slight break up ,then goose it with Klon or Rat, not much but just enough to do the raunchy bassman thing.

Here is today's chores. Getting the best lead tone to finish this weeks song up. Learned a lesson today, the wife favors the look of the 1960bx cab..she says when she walks in room & sees the purple VM 2266 out, she takes things off tables & counters. I laugh cause she has it timed how long until i downtune & boost it. We got Santa figurine out yesterday & he was dancing on the kitchen table. Made a devastaing rig yesterday, Stacked VM rig on top 1960bv cab with gt75/vintage X pattern. Thats the gig rig, if we get blessed to play out again. That VM has shades of tight boosted 800 but with kt66 is is fuller sounding. Been struggling this year cause wife couldn't do the heavies at this current time..but we had a talk this week & she heard me playing & realized..its part of me..was a nice momment cause i sure did miss the heavies.3 pak.jpg

Welcome Tonehound, good to see a fellow Aussie & early Marshall circuit lover here. While I've built amps for others (& some have ended up well traveled across the country), I can only wish I had the skills to build a Les Paul clone.
I agree that the JTM50 is a beautifully responsive amp. Even without touching the guitars volume controls, it responds exceptionally well to picking dynamics.
While I occasionally jumper channels on my 4 holers, I usually use them like you do, guitar into the bright channel's high input & the unused volume on 4~5. Yes, the unused volume is still in circuit (V2a's grid leak grounds through it. Edit, actually, the unused channel volume is part of V2a's grid leak.) & so has an effect. Cheers
