New Strat Build - Pickup Opinions

Don,
That is a super good method! I am going to have to get up the courage to do it I guess. I am terribly afraid that I will end up botching it and having a giant hole in that beautiful strat body.
Anybody know where I can get a tone pot with a 1" diameter thread???:rolleyes2:

The Forstner bit on a low speed drill is very easy to control.

I think I will give this a shot this weekend. I have a drill press and an assortment of Forstner bits so I am covered there.
I certainly do think that I will be much happier with the 2 tone pots than with trying to make do with only one.

Thanks again, Don, for the great tip and for the inspiration!!

Not sure a drill press will work. You have to hold that dowel with some upward force while drilling with the other hand. I do it sitting down with the guitar body in my lap, rear side up, with my left hand holding the dowel from underneath sitting flush with the inside cavity floor and then using my right hand to drill slowly while taking out maybe a 1/16” at a time.

The closeups make the crack look horrible!
It is not nearly that noticeable unless you really look closely so most people won’t even see it.
The problem is that I know it is there and it is P’ing me off like you wouldn’t believe!

I hear ya', and feel your pain.
Don't dwell on the setback, rejoice in the progress.

And on a side note, that looks like the same drill press I recently got from my aunt.

That's a BEautiful guitar ninjaking great work!!! Sorry about the cracks, I would feel the same as you. But like Hackmaster said Don't dwell on the setback, rejoice in the progress. The guitar is really coming along and definitely luv the Hummers.:nice_guitar:

What was the body resting on on the drill press? I used my lap as I was more concerned with scratching the finish. Never thought that the finish is that fragile to pressure.

The body was resting on the piece of wood that the dowel was glued in. It was protected by a piece of cardboard between the wood and the body to prevent scratching, etc.

I have to say that I am not very impressed with the finish on this Warmoth body as it is easily chipped and has peeled a bit around the trem cavity. I used masking tape to mark and drill the holes for the trem cover and a bit of finished peeled when I removed the tape. I have also chipped the finish on the back as well and have not mishandled the body in any way. I would complain to Warmoth but I bought this body privately from a guy who bought it for a project that he never started. It was BNIB but definitely not under warranty or anything like that.

My Warmoth LP has an amazing finish that has proven to be very durable.

Regardless, I am almost done as just a bit of wiring left to finish up. I am really looking forward to playing this beastie!

Great work!

I wouldn't sweat the crack. This is an imperfect prosses. You have to do the same thing thousands of times to get a reasonably reliable process, and even then, there are mishaps. Each and every one of my projects has a permanent imperfection caused by...me! It gets under my skin, and then it is forgotten a month after completion. As we all know, even the big manufacturers have "B" stocks and I am sure there is a regret in the mind of every small builder on every build.

In the end, this is rock and roll baby. Rock that thing!!
