He was a very underestimated guitar player, imho. Here's an example:

Marc doesn't foreground his guitar playing, but he has an amazing touch for both solo and lead, imho. Would Prince exist if Marc hadn't trodden the paths a decade or two earlier???

Marc definitely influenced a lot of people. Bowie was definitely one of them, and the Ziggy Stardust persona may not have existed without Marc's presence. T-Rex started out as an acoustic duo with Steve Peregrin-Took, and didn't really come into it's own until about '70-'71. Maybe because of the attention Mott the Hoople was getting. He probably had a lot of influence on the New York Dolls and other up and coming bands. He definitely picked up on the larger than life stage persona and clothing that Hendrix and others from the psychedelic era had started.

If you ever get to see the movie "Born To Boogie", see it. It's a great live documentary of T. Rex, and it was filmed and directed by Ringo Starr. You definitely see the connections between Psych and then Glam. Members of T. Rex also drifted in and out of the Deviants and the Pink Fairies. So definitely no big wall between the two. The audience is great. The young kids in the crowd are looking at Ringo while he's filming the concert like "who the hell is this old guy with the camera?" he couldn't have even been thirty at the time. It was when he decided he'd be a film maker after the Beatles called it a day.

Worst concert I ever saw. Marc was dragged off stage after three songs. He could barely stand up, couldn't sing or play guitar. I quit listening to them for years after that. Recently our band started playing Get it On in a medley with It's Only Rock and Roll where we switch back and forth between the two songs. I started listening to T-Rex again and realized I had been too harsh. Great songwriter and player.

He definitely had a formula...
playing the same song 20 different ways, until somebody liked it.
"bang the gong" was recorded 20 times /20 different names for the same song....until one of them caught on.

Sheer persistance and method to make a hit song.

Harsh! (But, maybe fair?)
