What's great about an SG?

Ampmad,,,,,,,,,, not saying P90's will suit or overcome what is sonically missing in your playing, but as far as SG's go, they hit it out of the park for

P90 for Townshend's best.

Some of Carlos' too.

Too much buzzing noise.
I don't associate celebrities success with pickups/amps/pedals.
No matter what amp/pickup/pedals they would sound basically the same.

In other words, Santana did not succeed because of what gear he used.
It was purely talent.
It was in his fingers.

AM,,,,,, not being argumentative or anything, but you are telling us that Pete Townshend sounded the same or less preferrable with his SG, Les Paul vs his Schecter Tele,Stratocaster sound? Or Clapton on his ES335/SG/LP vs his Strat sound? Or heck, even Carlos on his SG vs his Yamaha SG2000 or PRS?
Granted Santana still sounds like Santana if he plays a cigar box guitar, but I would likely not prefer how he sounds vs his Gibson days.

In all 3 cases, I would rather hear these 3, and even Jeff Beck on a Gib than a Strat.

Of course, I can also speak in pro Strat/Strat type manner just as well as I can speak critically.
Some of my other favorite guitar players like their Fender style guitars too. Adrian Smith, Dave Murray, Glenn Tipton, John Frusciante, Mike Mccready, Rory Gallagher...

On my G400, I did replace the stock Epi tuners with a set of Gibson Deluxe. Gibby tuners did seem to be a few grams less than the Epi ones. Replaced Not for performance but for aesthetics. Stock tuners seemed to work fine. View attachment 83479

Note the differences in tuner placement on your guitar???

Now, compare it to a vintage Gibson....

See what I mean???

The mentality is
people buy stuff because some musician uses it.
They think that if they buy a Dumble clone, they will sound like John Mayer.....
Of course they won't, but they think so.
Talent cannot be purchased.

As far as PUs go, I just can't live with the buzzing noise. That's basic.
I like regular old Gibson HB T top pickups.

I sure like how Kerry Brown has his RED 3 knob as his number 1. ( 1991 or 1993) I forget what year, but I truly remember in some fashion helping him pick up that beauty.

My Black one in my pic above was my first ever actual SG, the one that started it all for me in the SG realm.
I still remember my reaction when it arrived. I took it out of the box and the sweet brown Gib case, all good at that point,,,,,,,,,, then I see it's blackness, no pick guard, " HEY, where is the 4th knob?" " WOAH, what did I just buy?" " wait a minute,,,,,,,,,,,,, did I just get a really weird, oddball SG?" Then I played it and got an idea how it felt and sounded, shortly afterward I found Everything SG Forum likely when I was hunting for info about SG's with only 3 knobs. Col Mustard greeted me in his kindhearted and encouraging and welcoming manner. Let's just say, I was hooked after that day way back in 2012.

After meeting another fella on ETSG named mdubya who also is from Maryland, he also has a black 3 knob that he would tell me was his Number 1 gigging Axe. His has a pup swap in it, and Kerry's may have different pickups Gib put in by the time these hit the 90's. Mine has the circuit board, Bill Lawrence pups.
Mine has what Gibson called 1959 reissue or something like that. They look like 490s but they don't sound like other 490s I've played. Whatever they are they are excellent. I love the neck on my 3 knob, not too thick and not too skinny.

They're light, they're thin, they're comfortable, upper fret access is unrivalled, and they look cool as hell.

They can be finicky beasts though, some have wonky necks, some don't stay in tune, some suffer from neck dive and some have dead spots onbthe fretboard . I adore SG's, they're probably my favorite guitar type, but play before you buy is a must. The worst guitar I ever owned was a Gibson SG.

Well….. it’s been awhile, but pretty sure I didn’t have to drill new screw holes. It was plug and play. So….. Quality Control issue?

Regardless. I like how they look. It tunes up just fine. Stays in tune.

Evidence of individually drilled holes.

you should try a modeling pedal or some SS amps -- they are less prone to hum than tube amps......... :io:

T-Tops can be noisy too ...the stock T Tips in my Mom's1979 Les Paul Custom are noisy and that's with all the factory RFI shielding intact.

I've encountered a lot of noise issues with Gibson pickups. Not all are the Holy Grails.

A good SG can be an excellent tool. There are so many iterations out there now. All with different characteristics. For example; @Kerry Brown , and @chilipeppermaniac have a couple of examples that have the very “Les Paul-ish” neck pickup placement…22 frets, and the pickup ring slammed against the fretboard, placing a coil in the 24th fret harmonic sweet spot…kind of like my 81-ish Firebrand The SG Deluxe here

Then there’s the batwing models, with either P90s or humbuckers, that place the pickups closer together…

There are others too…the 70s had lots of evolution going on…
