Upcoming project

Just bought a neck and tuners today for an assembly I have in mind for some upcoming gigs this summer. I'll be sitting in with an old high school chum's band. I already know the guys so it should be fun!

Anyways, on to some pictures....

The neck wood is Jabota, which is a very hard/dense wood that grows in Central/South America, and also the west coast of Africa. It has a Janks rating of 3200, making it one of the hardest woods on the planet. Fret board is Indian Rosewood with real MOP inlays.

The body is one piece ash and weighs in at 3lbs 4 oz. Very light! Also, an extremely thin coat of nitro for the finish. Just looking at it makes it chip or crack! I have also ordered vintage looking staggered locking Kluson tuners made by Gotoh, and I will be installing a brass nut...no string tree should be needed. A Callaham bridge will used as well.

As for p/u's, I am leaning towards Wilde alnico Micro Coils, the last p/u design from the late great Bill Lawrence (RIP), in cream. While not noiseless per se, they are extremely quite true single coils that rival a lot of single coil sized h/b's for quietness.

Lastly, I am trying to decide on a tooled leather p/g for the final touch...there's just so many cool ones! This guitar has to look cool on stage and when I go fishing, right?

You be careful there Strumerjoe, them gators love the sound of a Strat...
Luckily, no gators up here in Washington.

Looks like a great project,, break a leg for the gig bro.
Looks to me as if ya have it all figured out for now..
And it does make you look cooler out fishing…
Cheers
Mitch
I almost have it all figured out. Still mulling over p/u's. I also need to figure out a p/g. I really want it to stand out. (my old chum is a heckuva picker so I need to get attention somehow!)

I'm leaning towards something like this tooled leather pg...and a strap to match.

I would suggest shielding the entire insides before you put it together.

You can probably glue copper foil to the back of the leather...I'm not sure if shielding paint is going to stick on leather. Never tried that.
3M spray adhesive should do the trick.

Here's some old pics of me when I worked for Bunker Guitars. RIP Dave Sr.

I also worked at RainSong for a time, as well as teching at several stores and some studios in the Seattle area.

If you are using a high gain amp, or booster pedals, I wouldn't expect the micro coil pickup to rival humbucking pickups.
Maybe if you were playing a low gain clean Princeton amp, the noise would be acceptable.
But a single coil is going to get quite noisy when it's boosted by a high gain setup.

Shielding will help...but it's not going to be as good compared to a humbucking PU.

A. You can use 2 of the single coils with a 5 way switch to make a humbucking circuit....super strat wiring.
B. You can use a dummy coil inside the guitar to cancel the hum.

But I would go for the JBE humbucking strat pickups developed by Danny Gatton.
Because they sound pretty much just like Fender PUs, with higher output and no buzzing noise.
And there is a coil switch option with these PUs, so you can play it single coil if you want.
