totally unpopular opinions.

Yes very good point. I am no lawyer or even intellect of some sort but I have a reasonable amount of guirars, amps and camera equipment. And I use it!
Over the last 2 years I bought a small Leica M10 system. That little camera bag full is likely worth more than many people pay for housing in a year. So excessive!
But I get a smile on my face when I use it! I also own no guns, ATVs, boats, motorbikes, RVs....ya put the money where you are gonna use it.

I hear you Jethro...

Agree completely. I make a conscious decision not to go as crazy with guitars as I theoretically could. Same with the other hobby I have that I spend money on: wristwatches. They are an even bigger rabbit hole than guitars, and it's super easy to get wrapped up in the acquisition end of the hobby, so I put some pretty stern limits on myself and set a yearly budget.

Because we don't have any other expensive hobbies, don't really set a limit on toys. Must be usable ones though and have room for them!!

We don't even travel much. So when we do, lately we have got some fam and friends and booked a small 8 seater private jet. Flew to Victoria for supper with some friends a couple years ago!! Living the dream...

“Budget”

Reminds of a time we were up visiting the in-laws at Lake Almanor in the Sierras. I was driving through the neighborhood with the FIL and we pass this really nice house and he says:

”That’s Frank and Mary’s place (OK I forget their real names), they just did a kitchen remodel a few months ago. Frank told his wife that she has an unlimited budget to do whatever she wants.”

”She exceeded it” :pound-hand:

That's exactly the point. It would get silly if I bought every guitar or watch that strikes my fancy even though I can technically afford it. My wife doesn't get involved - I earn 100% of the money, so she stays out of it (and I in turn indulge her handbag and shoe fetishes) so the limits are completely imposed by me on myself just to retain some sanity.
