Hawking: 'we must leave Earth before 2117'

Professor Stephen Hawking is making a documentary about humanity's need to colonize other worlds.
Whether it be due to global warming, nuclear war, genetically engineered diseases or a rampant artificial intelligence - the next 100 years could prove disastrous for the human race.

Hawking, who is currently working on a new documentary entitled "Expedition New Earth" with former student Christophe Galfard, now maintains that in order for our civilization to survive, colonizing other planets sooner rather than later is going to be absolutely essential.

"Although the chance of disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time," he said back in November, while noting that "we should have spread out into space and to other stars, so a disaster on Earth would not mean the end of the human race."

It's difficult to fault his logic, after all - right now we really do have all our eggs in one basket.

Whether humanity can colonize other worlds within 100 years however remains to be seen. - See more at: Hawking: 'we must leave Earth before 2117' - Unexplained Mysteries

I though it was 2525 lol do u think the ole chap,is right lol

I figure I'll be gone by 2060 at the latest...I'll have to hit 100 to even get that far...

He is either correct or he is wrong but it does not matter either way.

I think there are important discussions taking place at the League of Inhabited Planets Galaxy Headquarters right now.
They are considering the way humans behave and the fact that we are on the verge of no longer being Earthbound.
I am pretty sure they will decide to obliterate this planet rather than have us get loose among the civilized worlds.

....or maybe they behave just like we do.
:ohno:
If that is the case and they get here before we get there, we are in trouble.

...or maybe they think our movies are real news clips and they have a big "STAY AWAY!" notation
on their galactic map because they think every time anyone comes here we somehow manage to kick
their asses despite our vastly inferior technology because we are extremely ornery and quite insane.
If I was an imperialistic conquering alien race and I saw Independence Day or read Footfall I
wouldn't come within a billion parsecs of planet Earth with conquest on my mind.

Mankind is doomed. We will all die..... Oh well...
We better concentrate on the real serious issues here.
So, who just spent tons of money on a new guitar? :victoire:

LIFE= the ULTIMATE Sexually transmitted terminal disease.

That is all ---move on---

How does attempting to colonize another planet guarantee humanity's perpetual survival? Keep in mind...it would only be an attempt. There is no assurance of success. There is a sizeable risk of failure.

Anyway, if we can't learn our lessons on this planet, what makes us think we'll suddenly behave ourselves on another? After all, the "earth" is not trying to kill us. We're trying to kill us!

Besides, 99% of all species that have ever lived on the earth have gone extinct. Our extinction would simply be another brick in the wall.

Have a nice day!

... that we even do not know any suitable planet we can reach with our technology.

BTW: Hawking does not need to worry: as soon as we knew about a planet with environmental conditions suitable for us in a distance somehow doable with our little bit of technology, some people would try to reach that planet. Knowing that there would be no way to return for them.

Let's look at it another way. Consider the dinosaur. We like to use the term "dinosaur" as a euphemism for something that is out of date, antiquated, or otherwise behind the times or unable to survive.

Well, let's look at just one species of dinosaur: the Tyrannosaurus Rex. By some estimates, the T-Rex was on the earth from 67 million years ago to 65 million years ago. In other words, it enjoyed an existence of about 2 million years.

By contrast, modern man has been on the earth for only about 200,000 years, and civilization as we know it, is only about 6,000 years old.

So, our entire existence is but 1/10 of just the T-Rex. Our civilization is only three-thousandths of the time T-Rex roamed the earth. That's not much for us to brag about. It seems we owe the dinosaurs an apology for disparagement! If we've only been an organized species for 6,000 years and already we are doubtful of our continued existence...well, that speaks to a deeper issue that won't be solved simply by checking out the real estate in Alpha Centauri (or wherever).

T-Rex did better than that!

Either way, my arse is remaining firmly planted to earth. If the apocalypse does so happen to come via the sun frying us all, nuclear war fare, or what have you. I will break out my 2x12 and grab my goth epiphone sg and welcome it with the most brutal riffs I can come up with with the volume cranked at 11.

Dinosaurs?
They were amateur survivalists.
Only here 140,000,000 years.
Lets talk about the insects.
Here before the dinos.
Still around today.
Bacteria?
Forever.

I think the earth will be around a lot longer then humans, then the earth will recalim every thing like that tv life after humans or what ever it was called
