...Welp... I’ve held off about as long as I could.

So this was kind of an inevitability when I got the 7 string Schecter. When I last recorded with it I had to take my bass and seriously down tune the low E and A string, it worked for what I needed, but having also tuned to drop A on the Reaper... you can see where issues are abound.

Monday I’m going to start prepping for another song and possibly an ambitious one and I’m thinking the 7 string will be perfect for it. But I think it’s time I upgrade and get a new bass.

Can I suggest stepping up to the SR505E.
It is a little bit more expensive and a bit duller looking finishes, but 'BARTOLINI's'!
The SR500's are the watershed in the SR line-up, where wood, hardware and electronics improve.
The quilting of the SR400's is most likely only a veneer, whereas SR500's and above are either solids or laminates.
When they 'SunBurst' a quilted top it is usually to hide the thinness of a veneer.
No more 'Ibanez' in-house pickups. The Bartolini's of the SR500 models are Korean licenced, but still an improvement.
At the SR500's and above the hardware starts to improve, starting at the B505 bridge (vs B305).

But that said, by all accounts, you can't go far wrong with your choice. :2Thumbs:

I had the SR500 for a while and I still have severe sellers regret.
If there is no urgency to your purchase, I would recommend scouring the shops for a 2nd hand SR505 or above.

Damn... excellent food for thought. Still being a novice in the bass world, Bartolini’s are that much of an improvement? (An actual question, not being sarcastic, I have no experience with them).

TBTH --Ive owned both --they are "nice" --- but..........there are a million or 10 million bassists not using them ----if you get my "drift"
peavey millenium1 (1).jpg

I like them.......but only 1 of my basses has them

FYI the PEavey Millenium Series is another NICE option --- as is the Dyna series---

look at Peavey -- truly you can get a USA MADE bass.......for the price of an import--- they arent NEW -- but???? does that really matter its a BASS

so many SOLID options in the Peavey line -----but -- Ibanez does KILL IT for that "metal" thang ;)

Nice one Norm!...but back to bang for the buck, budget, 5 string, boomers....
Says “crafted in the USA” on the headstock...

there it is! (your slow going on a Sunday Norm--- get some coffee and catch up!!!)

I think the Godins are a bit outta the Lads price point from his openeing post however nice they are ;)
So here’s the situation, because trust me, I’m not snubbing Peavy, or Godin. I’m looking to finance, I have a credit card with Musicians friends with a limit of $800. Musicians friends are doing 48 month financing on instruments $500 or more. Either way I can easily make the payments.

I was mainly looking at Ibanez because I’m familiar with their necks. My hands sit at a nice medium but I only really ever pick up the bass when I’m recording and every now and then quick changes where I have to stretch to hit a note has caused a painful pop in my hand.

So I’m looking for a bass that’s got a neck that’s easy on the hands, 5 strings, and can punch through heavy distorted guitars and orchestra bits.

When it comes to bass pickups... I really have no idea what I’m looking for to be honest.

If you want a little more FLASH

Ive owned a Stiletto they are damn well put together

sand lastly I will float this out there --

now the reality is PLAYABILITY -- tone and (lets be honest) cost--

Ive owned both a Stiletto and a Dean Edge 4 string --- both EXCELLENT --- Ive owned several Ibanez (never the SE 505E though)

most all of these are going PUNCH through and give you great tonal options

ALSO (if you dig really deep) you will find probably 1/2 to 3/4 of them are made at one of 2 factories --- (really) ---so ........???

Do your research and ENJOY STALKING YOUR PREY ;)

Damn, lots of options and things to think about. Also typical me. “I need a 5 string metal bass, so I’m going to forget that LTD and Dean exist.”
