Billy Gibbons Crate: A tale of a forgotten amp

**Mods please move it not in the appropriate place**

I've been a Crate fan since the days of Marty Friedman playing the Blue Voodoo with Megadeth. Being a big Megadeth fan, I was influenced and always wanted one. After trying a few of them out, I finally landed on a newer model, which I found some modifications that tames the "buzzsaw" of the BV120 and makes it a playable monster.

Anyways, I've always been on the lookout for good deals on Crate gear, searching all the time on the usual used web markets. One day I stumbled across something that I had never seen out of the Crate stables. This was about two years ago, IIRC, and found this strange head on CL listed by a Pawn Shop in my area. It was relatively cheap, but I couldn't find any information on it anywhere on the web. They listed it at $200 and say that it lights up but they have no other idea if it works.

Enter the Crate BFG100:

I go down to the Pawn Shop to check it out and the clerk there knows nothing about it, where it came from, etc. She tells me that she's been getting calls all the time about it and I blow that off as hype so I'll buy it. She did say that she could drop the price to $150, which at the time was very tempting. I'm thinking, if it's close to working, I'll pick it up. However, as she one hands it up onto the glass counter, I can tell, there's ZERO weight to the head.

First impressions is that the tolex is done hastily, so maybe this was a custom build someone created. But the chassis face plate looks legit and professionally done. I turn it around and look through the back grill

Inside, there's nothing. And I mean nothing. No transformers, no tubes, no tube sockets, nada. I can see through the empty tube socket knock outs that there is literally nothing inside the chassis. It's a dummy head. The only thing that is present is the front knobs, switches and indicator light, along with the rear jacks and power input. She says that they plugged it in when the person dropped it off and it turned on which was good enough for them. I can tell by the edges of the chassis starting to rust that it's been around quite a bit, which goes along with the scuffs, scratches and dirty condition of the head itself.

For some stupid reason, I pass on it. A week later, it was off CL and I never heard about it again.

**to be continued**

Last year, I'm surfing the local CL and I find a listing for a Crate cab. No description, just that it's a Crate 412 cabinet and it's for sale for $250. Click on the link and I see the companion 412 to the ill fated and lost BFG100 head. As fast as I can, I email the guy and tell him, "I want it! When can I pick it up?"

We make the arrangements and I head over to his house. He turns out to be an employee of one of the companies owned by US Music Corp who owned Crate before shutting them down completely. His company is on the move, and they were clearing out their warehouse and offered a bunch of gear for sale up to the employees. This guy, being a player, he picked it up. Being that I liked the logo I asked him if he had access to anymore of them. He tells me, "I have another one of these cabs that I can let go, but it's got some issues with it." Bazinga!

I quickly tell him, "yeah man, I'm definitely interested and want that second cab!" He agrees to not post it up, but he says that he pulled the factory speakers out, replaced them with some from a different cab, the rear connection plate was not in there so he was using one from a different cab that really didn't fit, and one of the logo plates were missing. I didn't care about those and wanted it anyways.

He didn't know anything about the cabinets except that they were not production runs having no serial numbers and he couldn't find any information on his company servers.

I get the first cab home and open it to check out the spoils of war:

This thing is put together RIGHT! Birch ply wood, solid craftsmanship throughout, and in mint condition. I ended up emailing Eminence back and forth a few times about the speakers, and after checking some of the identifying tags, I find out they are standard Eminence Texas Heats. Not bad!

Now for the second cab....

**to be concluded**

So when I had my first interaction with the guy who was selling the cabs, I remembered that he said he pulled the speakers out and put them in a different cab because he didn't like the sound of the "Crate" crap speakers. Inquiring more about it, and I tell the guy I'd like to restore them to original, he tells me that he loaded them in an old Carvin cab and sold it to a local music shop. But, they probably still have it. He'll sell me the second cab, but it will be empty, and there's a missing jack plate on the back, and one of the logo plates on the front is missing.

First the speakers since this guy will hold the cab for me:

I call the shop up and ask them if they have it, give the guy's name, and the guitar shop owner on the phone says, "sure thing we still do. $99" First thing is I need to know if they are the "Texas Heat" speakers branded as Crate's. I head down to the shop and we pull the back jack plate off and I look inside.... Definitely! Crate BFG speakers! Now, I'm thinking to myself that I could explain to the guy that they are really Eminence Texas Heats with a different logo sticker on the back, and he'd realize the value of the speakers and jack the price up. I felt kind of deceptive for not telling him for about 5 minutes when I realize, what the hell, he should have done his research. Not my fault.

Now, I have to get the other cab from the original seller. I call him up, and when he originally told me that he wanted $100 for the second empty cab, but now he wants $150. And, I'd have more cabs than I know what to do with because I have to buy this crappy Carvin cab just for the speakers, and I have a couple of BV Crate 412 cabs at the house. Barter time. I ask the Guitar shop if they take trades and explain the situation. He says no problem, just bring it in with me and he'll give me an offer. We follow through and I end up taking the Carvin cab home for $50.

I yank the speakers out of it and turn it around on CL for $50. Break even! I had to wait for payday before picking up the second cab.

After a week I call the original seller up and snag the last of the unreleased BFG412 cabinets...

The input plate is indeed gone, no wiring of course now, and the worst plate to be missing is gone, the "BFG signature" plate is the one that's missing. What to do....what to do....

**to be finished, for real this time**

To restore this cab back to 100% I needed to find the new logo badge and the rear jack plate. Crate is gone, no bueno. There's absolutely no way I can call up Crate and order them up. Even after a few conversations with the original seller, even he says there is absolutely no information in their system that indicated that these were even built. I'm gonna have to be creative.

For the BFG logo plate, I call upon a good friend who does graphics for a living. She has a couple of different options we can try but she suggests a laser etched plastic blank that she can fill in with the off-white/cream color to match the original. I scan the original and email her the file. A week later she sends me three plates, two of which are perfectly done. The first was a prototype as she was trying out different methods.

(the lesser of the three since I can't find my pictures anywhere)

One part down. The last part was the rear jack plate. I originally wanted to get one custom made since of course I couldn't order the correct replacement. However, realizing that Crate was shut down and Blackheart took over in it's place, I checked out their line, and sure enough, there's the same style, layout, etc. of the BFG412 plate:

- exact same fit -

I found a Blackheart 112 cabinet on GC's used site and ordered up the cab for less than what I was quoted for a new custom plate from a local metal shop. Score! I stole the metal jack plate from the 112 and ordered up a plastic fill in for it. Loaded the 112 with a WGS Retro 30 I had kicking around from an ISOCab I sold, and have a decent little grab and go cabinet.

The plate off the Blackheart 112 was flipped over and painted gloss black to match the other cabinet. Now, it doesn't have the silkscreen, but there's no way I can find a replacement for that. Maybe some day I'll find someone who can reproduce the silk screen of the plates.

speakers were wired up, everything put back together and now I have two matching unreleased prototype 412 cabinets designed for the awesome Billy F Gibbons!

And to top the story off, a year before this whole story kicked off, I was in Vegas for a trade show and my company was invited to a private party. Up on the stage, the band starts playing, and it's Dave Navarro on guitar, Sugar Ray singing, and a few other veteran band mates that I can't seem to recall anymore...

And then The Reverend walks on stage....

Enter the Crate BFG100:
several years ago i saw a crate rig of that time - areal one, not a dummy - slightly smaller head, only 2 power tubes, i.e. about 50W on a 412 cab like the above.

Guess where?

In a small shop specialized on race bikes!

The rig belonged to the owner of that shop...

But when i hear Crate, i immediately think of this one:

My first practice amp. I set the baffle as close to the front as possible, modified the tuning of the little cab and replaced the speaker by an Eminence Beta 8. A lot better than before. Not only as a bass practice amp but also usable for guitar and much better than many of the 118 guitar practice amps. Play it through a real bass cab with something like an Eminence Beta 12 or even a large bass rig: really "grown up" tone - due to the limiter surprisingly loud and always clean - You can safely crank it ( i gave it a speaker out ...)
