I don't have Facebook but my gf does and sometimes she sends me texts (she's a keeper) with ads from FB marketplace. I didn't need another guitar and nor was I looking for one but today she sent an ad for an old Höfner guitar for $300 while I was at work. They are becoming quite expensive over here and it's rare to find one for under $500. Anyway, I offered them $250 and they agreed so I went way out in the sticks and picked it up from some white trash back yard full of old car carcasses.
It's not in great condition but OK, there's a nasty ding on top but otherwise it's mostly dirty (it makes my strat look clean) and with finish cracks.
The pots are stuck and there's no sound coming out of it. The pots are dated week 51 of 1959 and the white pickups indicate a 1959 model but the built in tremolo effect was introduced in 1960 as an option and went away in -62. It's powere by a very hard to get 3V battery.
Both pots were stuck, I managed to get one to working but the other one is busted and it nneds a new set of tuners. Luckily, Höfner is still in business and offer all otiginal spare parts.
The strings were thick as hell and flat wounds, they looked as old as the guitar itself. The action is crazy high, 5.4mm at the 12th fret and it seems the bridge is maxed out and can't be lowered anymore but it doesn' t appear as if the neck angle is off although it must be and probably needs a reset.
This shall be an interesting project and a challenge to set up. I woyld really like to not have to do a neck reset...
