Weird D'addario String Behavior:

Had a few sets of XL's on hand and decided to use them on my Schecter C1-FR before Sunday's marathon rehearsal. They were EXL-120 .009 x .042's and - as always- i mic'd them to confirm diameters.

I put them on and dropped the guitar to Eb, then leveled the bridge and adjusted the relief.

I played it a few days before locking the nut and took it to rehearsal. I was playing rhythm, so i didn't even have my bar installed.

Right away, i noticed the strings felt heavier, the guitar sounded darker and my tuning just wasn't stable as it was before. I just ignored it.

Last night, i went back to the Ernie Ball Cobalt .009 x .046's that i have always used and tuned it right back to Eb, which is where all our guitars are for this project.

Immediately i noticed the guitar came to pitch much faster, but that's when i saw the bridge- which was dead-level with the XL .009 x .042's - was now pulled back to where the rear edge of the bridge was below the body cutout.

It took almost a full turn of the claw screws to return the bridge to level. The D'addario's, despite being a lighter gauge, took more tension to reach pitch.

The guitar felt lighter and had a brighter tone, but stretched in really quickly, which is how they always seem to me.

Now, when i looked at the D'addario's i took off, i noticed the wrap was opening where the string bent over the saddle radius. Not sure if this even matters, but i noticed it.

Hmmmmm....

I noticed a recent shipment the 10's i get...seemed thicker & less bouncy...set the Firebird up on em last night...that guitar loved it...the Lp's no so much. ...i guess like anything else..dif batch..dif results...just wish companies had to keep their performance at a level the public demands of my company..if i don't perform..spot on..on time....we don't eat....

Have never had an issue with these strings, the only ones I use.

D'Addario EXL110 Nickel Wound Electric Guitar Strings, Regular Light, 10-46

They've always started out too "zingy" sounding, then after about an hour they are suddenly dull and won't hold tuning. And compared to other brands the tension seems uneven, and the materials just feel cheap.

the low E comparison i just looked at...it's a thicker 10..if i cared, would get a micometer.,,going to run with it all day long & use it to tame the bright ones...blessing in disguise..the Firebird just got back in the lineup

I do not order my strings through mail order. I always buy at my local shop where you know there will be no issue, as their Distributors order direct from D"Addario.

I dunno anything about d'addario strings.

I dunno anything about d'addario strings.

I dunno anything about d'addario strings.

be like Ed King...use seashells for picks..shred them strings up quick

this is an incredible video..i sure listened to his advice..i back to 9 ish vs diming all the time for that fatter tone

Last time I had D-Addario's on a guitar was about 3-4 years ago. I took one of my guitars in for a fret level, gave the guy a set of Boomers to put on it when the work was done but he put on D'Addario's instead (I could tell from the ridiculous and unnecessary colored ball-ends) and left my Boomers in the case. No biggie I thought, but they were godawful and I thought the guy had screwed my guitar up until I couldn't take it any more and ripped them off of it and put the Boomers on. Ahhh...perfect. He actually did a really nice job with the frets.

4 guitars with 10-46 D'Addario 5 years not one string break, Practice 2 hours every day and do some gigs, change my strings when they become dull which is usually around 6 weeks. Hmm maybe I have to play them more to get them to break. And I like the tones, and also like the coloured ball ends , makes changing strings even easier.
