Really Great String Gauge Video...

@Pissed Plexi just started a thread on this same video.

But, as they discussed a bit, the feel of the string matters, too.

I really don’t like 8s. I’ve tried them, and I just don’t like the feel. Oddly, I have a different mix of strings. On my Les Paul Custom (which has a thicker neck) I prefer 10s. On my Les Paul Studio, I prefer 9s. Same scale length, but slightly different neck profile. On my Strat I like 10s. On my Jackson I like 9s. Again, same scale lengths, but different profiles. I have 10s on my Washburn and my 2014 SG. I have 11s on my ‘74 SG, but, I’m thinking about changing that guitar to 10s, too.

Again, aside from sound, there is a certain feel that goes along with it.

But, I do have one beef with the video. Why do these types of videos ALWAYS feature just heavily overdriven/distorted sound clips!? It drives me nuts. I would love to have also seen them do some comparisons using very clean sounds through a Fender amp, or something similar. The results may have been the same, but it would have made for a more complete comparison.

IIRC, I've been playing 10-46's since '77 or '78. Now I feel like I owe it to myself to reevaluate my choice in string gauges. I'll start with a guitar like my Strat, because of the longer scale, and try a set of 9's... Here I go again!

Ha Ha! I went through the string thing myself. Up to 11's then down to 8's and even tried 7's! I've settled on 9/42 but I could do with 9/40 or 9/38 I believe...
 
switching back and forth from bass to guitar I have found 9's are as THIN as I can go and really am liking 10's on the Gibbos -- except te LPR -- its neck is thin and narrow and it just begs for 9's
8's too thin 7's I cant even feel the high strings at all really
 
Yea I subscribe to Rick as I like his personality, and most vid's I learn from! That one was quite interesting. I was going to post on his Utube page that he's forgotten the ol' Dan Armstrong super strings which have a .007 " E '' string … as you try to install it it's so thin that it can easily go right thru your finger, you really have to be careful since it hurts like bloody hell!
 
I’m definitely going to try some 9s the next time I buy a new set, just for the hell of it. When I first started playing electric I played 9s, but I very quickly switched to 10s.
 
I used up my remaining stash of 3 sets of 10’s over the weekend, just replaced the strings on the three guitars that had the oldest sets. So now, stringless, I plan to buy a case of 9’s and start working them in. It’s been over 20 years since I strung a guitar up with 9’s so kind of curious how this will go.
 
I worked in some 9.5-42 (basically 9s with a slightly thicker B and E strings)sets last year...I’m back to 10-46 this year. Not so much for tone, but for feel.
I tune down a half step...so when drop tuning, I’m at C#...the 42 was just a bit too squishy for my tastes...at least on 24.75 scale guitars.

The only non-standard tuning that I regularly employ is drop D, and so I feel like I should be able to get away with that using 9's. If not, I can keep one guitar set up with a heavier E or a full set of 10's to facilitate it.
 
9 x 46 always and forever...i tend to stick with Ernie Balls too

Try the solos ro 'Hotel California,' 'Another Thing Comin,' and 'Holy Diver' with .010's... :-)
