New Soldering Station Day... :woohoo:

I've upgraded from my 15 year old Weller WLC-100 to a brand new HAKKO FX-888D. The Weller has served me well, but I wanted to spoil myself with something a bit nicer after all this time. This HAKKO station turned out to be a lot nicer than what I was anticipating. Feels extremely solid and has this look of precision all over the system. BUT.... I haven't tried to solder anything with it yet.

Temps are digitally controled.

Temps are digitally read.

The temp can be set from 120 degrees to 899 degrees F (50 to 480 C).

You can activate 5 presets and set them up with different set-temps.

The soldering pencil heats up very fast. It reached 600 degrees in less than 30 seconds!

The soldering pencil's 4' cable is very pliable and soft... a feel of elegance!

The pencil holder is all metal and all business.

It's ESD SAFE!!!! You don't want to get infected with any ESD's... :ohno: It'll make you pee black...:run:

BUT.... I haven't tried to solder anything with it yet.

After I get done with remodeling my cellar and getting my workshop and benches created, I'll have to look into one of those. I'd really like a nice soldering station.

This is the same solder station that I use, and I love it. I am fed up with the crap Weller is putting out these days.

My old Weller SS (WLC-100) is about $50 new. But right now, Amazon has a nice price drop on them for $30!!! This is a lot of bang-for-the-buck.

The Hakko FX-888D that I just bought was a hair under $100. I found a deal that included an extra 4 different sized Hakko tips for another $20. The Hakko tips, just like the Weller replacement tips, average about $7 to $10 each if you buy them separately.

I run mine hot at 500, this works best for me because there is less contact time. I always prep what I am going to solder.
Pot backs are the hardest. I will use 0000 steel wool on them with a alcohol wipe to clean it up.
I have a little jar of solder flux close by to keep the tip clean and a wet sponge.

This solder station will serve you will, I have no doubt.

Anyways... Not surprisingly, the new Hakko station works very well. But... @ChasFred stated that he sets the temp at a "hot" 500°. I wasn't happy even at 600°. 700° seems to be where everything is flowing within a few seconds (3 to 5 seconds). I was soldering components to a board with eyelets that are very similar to the old style Fender fiber boards. Maybe I've been using a poor technique all these years, and been compensating with higher temps? @RVA... What temps are you using?

I use 750 consistently. It has worked well for me
