Falling To Pieces - Velvet Revolver:

Making a demo of this song today...... :-) My first side project in a while. So the original is in E-flat and I decided it sounded best - vocally there - so I used my double neck, which has a pretty big voice for all the rhythm parts. The double neck is a little bit dark sounding, but I thought it offered a good sonic contrast.....

Producer tells me the "Hey, Rob-----the double neck just doesn't cut it for this song. It's too dark and muddy. It's too close to the bass's tone signature. It's not gonna work. You need to re-track all the rhythms if this is going to be a decent demo..." I grabbed my Gibson SG (57 Classic + X Burstbucker Pro) and switch to the middle position (180 out-of-phase) rolled volumes and tones wide open and re-tracked...

Who wants isolated tracks??????

Ok,

Here's the VH Doubleneck's isolated tracks from today session. Just couldn't get the mud out. These tracks have been stripped for the junk file...

File starts playing around 0:40 and thete is a second pause before the track runs out.

Next, I recorded the same tracks with the Gibson SG in out-of-phase mode, so it has a very quacky, nasaly quality that cuts through anything in it's path. I am shocked at how it worked out for this song!!!!

Not perfectly executed guitar parts. Trying to play it kind of ragged and edgy, but it wouldn't be too touch to re-track everything and make it textbook perfect.... :)

Great job Robert..I have to say I do prefer the take with the SG. There is a bit more note clarity and separation. Sounds great. Now off to listen to some velvet revolver!!!

I agree. The track is just a rough take and I may re-record it, but the SG was the winner here...

Ok, so I added a second rhythm track, recorded with the S-G on the bridge pickup only, so the two tones (left & right channel) can be heard by the listener. I also added the solo this morning, but I still have more work to do. However, 7:30am means it's time to stop goofing around with side projects and concentrate on real, paying work.... :-)

Clean guitar parts , intro fill and main solo added this morning. Clean parts are played on 2016 Gibson Les Paul middle pickup position. All guitars (and the bass) were played through the Blackstar ID-Core 100 and recorded direct.

At this point, the song is about 75% complete...

More To Come...

There is a bit more clarity with the SG vs Doubleneck. Now I will see with added clean guitar parts.

I so dig this Velvet Revolver song. I kept trying to find the right tone for the solo, but everything sounded like I was trying to copy Slash.

I ended up grabbing the double neck and using the middle 180-out position with tone rolled to zero. Wow...like a Wah built in!

Then, I felt like my initial - 100% improvisation solo - just didn't do the song justice. So, I studied Slash's solo and combined about 80% of his original solo with maybe 20% of my own arrangements and I was surprised how good it came out!

Sorry to "Ramble On," about this, but I guess "I'm all shook up" over it... :-)
