NVAD coming up!

Sorry to hear of your mishap @Gahr .
Hope it heals quickly and correctly.
You live in Norway and slipped on ice...
Ice?
What ICE?

The doctors first thought it was broken, but after four x-rays they luckily concluded it wasn't.
I've been under the assumption that broken bones heal faster than torn ligaments. Maybe it's ligaments that have completely torn off that are worse than broken bones?

Excellent... :yesway:. When you started ripping on your phrasing, it kind of reminded me of Johnny Winter... :dood:

Thanks for the praise!

The doctors said I should, under normal circumstances be ok enough to work normally in a week or so, but it might take longer to heal properly. I guess it depends on me being careful to keep the foot elevated when seated and walk around a bit to strengthen the foot and get the blood pumping. If it were broken I would most likely be wearing a cast, which would make it impossible to do my job as long as I was wearing a cast. In the seventies and eighties they quite often operated on the ligaments, but they have found it is better to let it heal by itself.
Must have been from Gahr's home security cam... :D
Hahaha! Speed it up a bit and you are pretty close!

That does sound very nice, even through the low fi speaker in my phone. Not good doing that to your ankle. I hear the best thing to aid recovery is to maintain a healthy intake of the sort of "elixir" seen in your clip pic. I trust you'll be doing that. Cheers

I sprained my ankle on Saturday and have torn some ligaments. Seems like there will be no work for me this week. So when I'm stuck at home anyway, I figured I could make the best of it and mess around with a some sound clips of the Gibson GA-20T amp. Here's the first one.

Very quickly recorded with a Røde USB microphone, placed about 1' away from the speaker, directed towards where the dust cover meets the cone. Amp is turned to about 2 (the tremolo channel). I play my Les Paul goldtop. I mess around a bit with pickups and pickup volumes, and you can probably hear pretty well when I change pups. I also play a little in the middle position; the "Peter Green" sound is pretty easy to pick up.

I recorded it using Garage Band. No EQ-ing was done after recording, but I added some compression and limiting. The reverb is also from Garage Band.

I didn't plan what to play, but started doing a rather sloppy impromptu version of "How Great Thou Art", because I think it fits the raunchy clean sound of the amp. I start playing on the neck pup.

i hope it gives you an idea of what this amp can do at a fairly low volume.

!!! Love it, most aussumystical !!!

That's GREAT work there, Man!!!!!

Sorry to hear about the ankle Gahr, but happy to hear the amp! It sounds great and your playing is very good!
Thanks man!

I had to go to the doctor again yesterday. The ankle still hurts like hell, and walking is really pinful. The swelling is down a bit and the color is slowly normalizing, but I have to stay home for TWO more weeks and keep the leg elevated as much as possible. Pretty damn boring, and I’m running out of guitar videos on YouTube!

I didn't realize you'd had an accident, Gahr - glad it's healing well, sorry about the pain. Have you considered drinking beer to go with the antibiotics?

Your guitar technique should be improving excellently (although it was already very good indeed). Cheap internet pedal orders to relieve some of the boredom?

Hahaha, I’m not taking antibiotics, but of all things that do not help me recover, beer is probably one of the best.

As for shopping, I just pulled the trigger on a Catalinbread Talisman plate reverb! I’ve been looking for a new reverb pedal for ages, and have had my eyes on the Talisman for a long time. I’ll post pics and a quick review when I get it. Should be here this week, I think. What made me fall for it was the «smoothness» of the plate reverb. Spring reverbs are cool, but I like plate better. And it has both pre-delay and a high pass filter knobs, menaing it enables you to clean up the reverb sound nicely even when playing with lots of gain. All the reviews I’ve read have been favorable too.

I really like Catalinbread products. I was on a recent hunt for a more simplified reverb pedal, and the Talisman and their Topanga (Spring reverb) was on my radar. But alas, I ended up with the Fender Marine Layer... and the "simplified" thing I was looking for became a passing thought, ha ha!

The Marine Layer seems like a very nice sounding, useful and flexible pedal! I had never heard of it before.

The Talisman might not be particularly flexible in the sense that it doesn't provide other types than plate reverb, but then again I'm really not looking for a lot of different types of reverb or effects. What I want is a straight, smooth reverb that is clean and clear, even through an amp with rather hefty tube saturation going on. It is a digital "clone" of the EMT140 plate reverb, heard on tons of 70s records.

A quick update on the amp:

I swapped the speaker today. The Tone Tubby San Rafael was taken out, and I put in a WGS G12C 75W instead. I bought the WGS a long time ago, with the intention of installing it in My Fender Deluxe Reverb II, but I just never got around to it.

The San Rafael speaker is not very loud, and with the early breakup in the GA-20T, I figured it could be a nice idea to try a more efficient speaker with a higher watt rating, just to keep things just a tiny bit cleaner. Not having recorded the two different speakers back to back, and having only played the WGS or a few minutes, I can't say that much about the differences, but the WGS definitely feels slightly cleaner sounding and has a sweeter, more mellow top end. This is very much in line with my previous WGS experience, having installed a 20W Veteran 10" in my GA-5 instead of the stock CTS speaker.

Anyway: here are a few quick shots of the process:

Output trasnsformer (as far as I can find out it's a Magnetic Components Inc. (166) from the 37th week of 1959. If anyone thinks otherwise, please let me know!

Unless you have the opportunity to try one first before you buy, the alnico version might be the Holy Grail. But you'll have to save up for the alnico! Hey... ya only live once! :fingersx:

I was thinking about an alnico speaker when I decided to do the swap, but I think the slightly softer treble from the G12C is actually a good idea in the rather bright Gibson amplifier. Btw., here's a nice comparison video showing the differences between the G12C (ceramic) and G12A (alnico) speakers from WGS. The speakers are exactly the same except for the magnet. To be honest I'm not sure the G12A would fit in my GA-20T, because of the magnet protruding farther back than on the G12C.

Yeah, if the alnico wouldn't fit then that's a no brainer.

I like the video comparison you posted. Very well done. The differences are very subtle, but they are there. I guessed the correct speaker on the first three tone comparisons, and preferred the alnico even though the ceramic was beautiful sounding, too. I got the fourth one wrong, preferring the second speaker and thinking it was the ceramic. Lo and behold, it turned out to be the alnico.

Darrel Braun implies that during the demo of the clean tones that the alnico has an "upper presence" and an "upper frequency boost". I don't hear the upper frequency boost... I hear a bolder articulation, and not a boost of the those frequencies.

BTW, that's a beautiful sounding Tele...

I liked the video too. The only thing I wish was different was that he switched back and forth a bit during the comparisons.

I think the alnico sounded great as well. It kind of made me think of Vox amps, with their nice "chimey" highs. It would have been very interesting to compare the two speakers in my GA-20. One of the things I instantly liked with the G12C in my amp was the softer highs, but I have no doubt that the alnico version would have sounded lovely too. And, hey, there are tone controls, both on the amp and the guitar!:D
