Great Job by Gibson from 2016 to 2019...

...on SGs, at least. Four very solid years of excellent guitars, imho.

I'm gonna focus on the SG standards (cheating a bit for the 2019) and add one other from each year - I think they've got the balance right, the choice and options spot on for SGs.

I love this SG: P90s, batwing, just a lovely guitar. Wish I'd bought one when I had the opportunity.

A cool take on the special with humbuckers and binding - lovely guitar, imho.

2017 SG standard

A lovely colour choice (can still get the black or cherry if you like), 57s which many folks love and locking tuners, small pickguard for folks that like those - a great SG.

2017 Firebird T

I love the Pelham Blue, the mini-buckers, everything about it - a lovely guitar.

2018 SG standard

An interesting colour (black and cherry still available), locking tuners, 61 pickups which are great, small pickguard for folks that like them - a lovely SG.

An amazing guitar, so beautiful - does anyone on this board not desire one? I could easily see myself getting one if they get discounted heavily...
(I haven't even mentioned the 2018 SG/LP juniors which I think are amazing guitars.)

2019 SG '61

A beautiful '61 style guitar for folks (and there's many, including me) that want a '61, but don't wanna pay Custom Shop money. I want one, it'd complement my 61-ish styled junior perfectly.

2019 LP studio:

A couple of lovely colour options, binding and inlays, 490r/498t which are great for rocking out to, and coil-taps. As good a LP studio as there's ever been? (OK, ideally, I'd like locking tuners too.)

As an SG man, I think Gibson have offered up all the options possible for great SGs over the last 4 years, as well as some really great other guitars in the range.

They're cheaper than M.I.A. Fenders and PRS by some distance, and play and sound great.

Any thoughts?

What would your favourite SG from this period be?

I agree Gibson has put out a lot of nice guitars, but I think they made a lot of nice stuff in the years prior to this as well, 2015 being tge exception because of the wide fretboard.

I was actually very close to buying a 2016 P90 SG Standard a couple of weeks ago, but didn’t go for it because I found a 1959 Gibson GA-20 amplifier I wanted instead. (Which, according to FedEx, is scheduled for delivery later today, incidentally.)

Ya, couldn't agree more. I'd even take it back a couple of years and say the current run of excellence started around 2012/13. The '15's were anomalies because of the specs, but you can't fault their build quality and finishing, plus there were plenty of special dealer runs in 2015 that didn't have the goofy nut and robotuners. All in all, they've been building the most consistent guitars in their history and the 2019 lineup is one of the best yet.

How do you know this, gball? Have you test driven some of these newer ones? Not being a smart azz, I just haven't been around anything newer than say my 2010ish Epi LP, 2010-2012 Squier Classic Vibe Tele or Fender Steve Harris P bass. Been so long since I tried out or bought a new guitar, I even forget what my SG Faded, SG Classic, ES135 years are, but of course I bought them all used.

2013 was certainly a great year as far as the SG was concerned. The 2013 Standard is essentially a ‘61 reissue with a smaller headstock.

61 reissues were good? Gahr Are the 61 RI with bound necks and nibs or no nibs? Didn't Gibson have a run of a year or so, where they had some formerly nibbed models done the snag free way of fret over binding somewhere around 2013-16 somewhere in there?

Also IIRC,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Many guys had rave reviews of the SGJ's with their 24 frets and very reasonable prices.
I don't think these were reputed as being poorly made. Am I correct?

Ya, the 2019's have hit the shops already and they are spectacular. They have an ebony LP Classic at my local shop that I fell in love with but I think if I buy one it'll be a tobacco-burst LP Traditional.

They were killer. I had a 2014 and I really regret selling it - it was one of my favorite SGs ever.

The Ebony Classic has Zebra or P90's? gball? I only saw a Honey Burst and Gold Top Classic 60's with Zebras.
I do love a nice Tobacco Burst LP tho.

Nice to see you Shaun. Shreddy. I know I didn't "need" an SGJ, but if I had lotsa cash back then or now, I'd have snapped one up. I also wanted to score a moon inlay SG in Walnut but once again didn't know about em till probably long after production runs ended. Would love trying an ebony board one.
I must say my Alpine White /Yellowish /Creme color 1976 SG Std and my ES 135 make up for not getting these. Albeit they were both over twice to 4 x the price of a good Moon or SGJ. Serious keepers and beautiful instruments.

IIRC 2014 Standard Guitars had fret over binding...that has become a HP feature over the past few years.

´61 RIs have bound necks and nibs.
