Useful info on drills

No challenge perceived sir. Just befuddled at the dilemma.
I mean, we choose our tools...wisely or not. We learn from our own experiences.
Just as long as we get the job done.

When it comes down to it, it's just drilling a frigging hole (did ya forget about those greenlee punches?). Good discussion, as we all had opinions. But in the end would ya rather have a 60's, no frills Strat, or a modern wiz bang guitar (just yanking your chain)

Definitely making more of this topic than generally waranted, but that is the nature of a forum, I think!

There are many good points and opnions here, all from which I have benefited. As it stands, I would not chase bells and whistles, but I have not seen anyone justify this fear of a variable speed drill motor failing. They are certainly not new, and are known to be very reliable, so I see no reason to shy away from them in favor of a less flexible belt sytem.

I've almost changed my thinking, all required to get me over to the variable speed motor drill is for you to buy one and post ongoing reports annually. After 15 or 20 reports I make my final decision. Looking forward to following this thread for some time ;-)

I am really not trying to change anyone's mind, but rather explore and test the various positions so I can learn and understand.

I think either of Rays original choices would be more than up to the task.
Hell, you should see the P.O.S. drill stand with worn out 1/4' Skill drill that I depend on daily. And I've been using it for years.
However I've noticed an alarming trend with power tools.
Newer stuff always seems to be of lesser quality than the item it replaces.

Shop wisely and don't cheap out. Stay with known brands like DeWalt, Makita, Bosch, etc...

It looks nice. How heavy is it? Noise?
Thanks. It has smooth operation with not much noise. It is pretty heavy, about 50 lbs without the vise that I plopped on the stand, another 4 with it. I have to get a few long bolts and secure it to the table for safe operation.

I'm sure you'll be more than happy with the new toy.
Looks like it permanently set at 8,888 RPM ;-)

Yes, it is. It is referred to as the infinity drilling method.

You have to love progress.
Back in my day "infinity" was something beyond, unknown, now we know it's 8,888.
Some say this forum is about tone, but those who know will tell you it's all about advancement of knowledge.
Thanks Ray! :-)
