So, my current goal for my new recording setup is to record my own version of Rainbow's Stone Cold.

I will play rhythm, lead guitar and bass. I plan on using all of my guitars on this project.

A local keyboardist I met at my arts academy performance audition has agreed to perform they keyboard parts for fun.

Drums will either be contracted or perhaps drum machined - I haven't decided which yet.

I will sing lead and backing vocals out of sheer necessity.

I will post to this thread as we progress...

Sounds awesome Robert. Have fun with this project. That's a great great song, with a hell of an awesome solo, and some fantastic vocals.

Looking forward to hearing your work.

Rainbow Straight Between the Eyes was one of my first concerts.

Was up until 10:00pm with the keyboardist and drummer at his home studio. We completed the drum and key tracks for "Stone Cold" and I sent the Audacity file to myself, came home and laid down the bass track via XLR line out on my Fender Rumble 40...

I then tracked rhythm guitar us in my Double Neck and kind of created my own arrangement, but not too far off Blackmore's version.

I laid down an improvised lead this morning on my Les Paul.

The track hasn't had final EQ yet, but its got a great feel...a bit heavier than Rainbow's version but still tasteful.

I used only room echo on a single take, furiously played lead...this gives a very "hollow" sound, similar to Rhoad's EQ on Flying High Again. Then, I added a delay "tail" to the end of the solo on only one channel.

I'm still trying to get the hang of Audacity, but the track has such a great vibe.

I will post a link tonight before the vocals go on...

Ok, here is the basic tack.

I didnt like how the doubke neck sounded a little muddy, so i retracked with the Les Paul. The drums and keys were laid down for me. I tracked all the guitar parts on my Gibson Les Paul through my Blackstar's emulated line out into Audacity.

There has been no final mixdown. The guitar parts were recorded in one take and all mistakes were left in. On the lead guitar parts, one channel is dry and the other channel has reverb and delay added. Pan is roughly 40% left and right.

My idea here is for a heavier, guitar-dominant sound. This is what I hear in my head. The lead is improvised in a single, late-night take. It does not follow Ritchie's phenomenal arrangement, but rather I wanted to add some great and timeless rock-n-roll phrasing, similar to how I like to play live.

Let me know what you think...

Another Kick Ass track from one of our OWN :H5::cheers::H5::cheers:

Well, Thanks, Man...This is making its way onto our new CD as a cover tune...There is still a lot of work to do. I still gotta sing this one. The original song is in Am and I changed the key to G# to better suit my vocals....

Very nice. The lead needs to cut through a bit more. Other than that all I can say is wow! Wish I could could play like that. I really like that you added your own take to the solo and didn't try to play it note for note.

Thank you, Kerry.

Every track was cut in one take and I can hear things I would like to change already, but I might not re-track just to keep it spontaneous.

The drummer played different phrases throughout the song which I love. I also played bass and altered the bass line too.

Good catch on the volume level. Nothing has been mixed yet, so I need to pull back the rhythm a bit and boost the lead a little bit more. Then, after vocals are tracked, I need to add the lead fills in the verses.

It's coming together though!!!

Ok, it's still not finished, or even properly mixed down yet, but I added the vocal tracks, double-tracked (live) and remixed the lead guitar to cut through the mix a little better, EQ'd the rhythm guitar so it stands out better in the mix and added a few lead fills.

Still needed is the remaining vocal harmonies and the outro solo still has to be composed and recorded, but I am getting the hang of Audacity.

This is the long version without the fade out.

Now, I have never liked my vocals. In fact, I only sang when a vocalist failed to show up, but I felt like this came out pretty decent with the key dropped from Am to G#.

Enjoy...

Stone Cold

Positive ... very well performed and produced, textbook stuff, congratulations. I can see why you're in demand and always working.
Negative ... not my style, not ballsy, doesn't sound like a pub band.
I'm easy pleased, you shoot for perfection.

I can dig it! I actually like the pub band tone myself. Some of the live recordings are the best!

It's been fun messing with Audacity. I'm kinda getting the hang of it now.

This morning, I listened to a playback and realized that when I double tracked the lead, my timing was off all the way through, but it gave the lead a much "bigger" sound so I left it alone.

Its gonna be fun to listen to the completed version once its been through final mixdown.

Singer is coming over Sunday and we arr going to work on some new material....
